We’ve got a new horse trainer joining the Hill River Equestrian team in January 2027… 🤍

They’re a little short on experience, unlikely to muck out any stables and probably won’t be riding for a year or so but we couldn’t be more excited to announce that we’re expecting a baby!

So, what does this mean for my wonderful clients over the next 7–8 months?

Initially, not a lot! Business will continue as usual for the time being. As my pregnancy progresses, there will come a point where I’ll need to slow down, particularly with ridden horse education.

Lessons will continue for most of the year as normal, you might just have to forgive me if I’m a little slower getting around the arena… apparently growing a tiny human takes more energy than retraining Thoroughbreds! 🤭🐴

Young horse handling will also continue. I pride myself on taking the time to build confidence and keep sessions calm and low risk and I plan to continue doing that for as long as I safely can.

Thank you all so much for your understanding, patience and continued support. Hill River Equestrian wouldn’t be what it is without such amazing clients and we’re so excited to share this next chapter with you all.

Miss Mary had her final session with me last week and it has been an absolute pleasure working with this lovely filly once again. 💗

I had the privilege of halter training Mary as a foal, so it’s been incredibly special to watch her continue to grow and develop.

During her time with me, she’s learnt how to wear a rug/ fly mask, stand hard tied, had an introduction to the hose and continued building on general handling and confidence.

She has taken everything in her stride with her kind, willing nature and has been an absolute sweetheart every step of the way! 🐴

Continuing on from my post about track systems (or Paddock Paradise) last week… 🐴🌿

One of the things I love most about changing the way I keep my horses isn’t the extra movement, it’s seeing them get to be horses again.

It’s watching King wander off to find a different pile of hay because apparently the one he was eating five minutes ago is no longer acceptable 😆 It’s seeing Sydney decide he absolutely must supervise everyone. It’s watching the herd spread out, come back together and have the opportunity to make choices throughout the day.

We often spend so much time thinking about exercise and training that we forget about the other 23 hours in a horses day.

Are they able to move freely?
Do they have friends?
Can they forage?
Do they have things to investigate and interact with?
Do they get to make choices?

Enrichment doesn’t have to mean expensive toys or complicated setups.
It can be as simple as:

- Multiple hay stations
- Different surfaces to walk on
- Logs to step over
- A herd to interact with
- Space to wander and explore
- Being given the opportunity to simply be a horse

I truly believe so many behaviours we label as naughty, lazy or too much are often horses trying to tell us that something is missing.

The more we can meet their natural needs, the happier and healthier they tend to be.

At the end of the day, my goal isn’t just to have well behaved horses. It’s to give them a life they enjoy living.

It’s easy to get caught up chasing goals, fixing problems or preparing for the next competition but…

Don’t forget to enjoy the little moments too.

Some of my favourite rides aren’t the ones where everything goes perfectly, they’re the ones where I finish with a smile on my face and a horse that enjoyed the journey just as much as I did!

Have you ever heard of a track system or Paddock Paradise before? 🌿🐴

It’s something I’ve become really passionate about and it’s exactly why my own horses live this way.

Horses aren’t designed to stand in one paddock waiting for their breakfast and dinner with a bale of hay in one spot. They have evolved to be constantly moving- walking, grazing, browsing, resting, exploring, socialising and making choices.

That was my goal when we built our track.

Instead of giving my horses one big paddock, I’ve designed an environment that encourages them to keep moving throughout the day. They travel between hay, water, grazing, enrichment, different footing, scratching posts and their favourite places to rest.

For me, it isn’t about making them exercise

It’s about making movement a natural part of everyday life.

What’s really exciting is that research is now starting to support what many track owners have been seeing for years.

Recent studies have shown horses on track systems:
🐴 Walk significantly further each day (kilometres and kilometres more!)
🌱 Display more natural grazing behaviours
🤝 Have fewer aggressive interactions= more social
⚖️ Can manage their weight more effectively than horses on restricted grazing

Of course, no management system is perfect for every horse. Track systems still need thoughtful planning and good management. But when they’re done well, I truly believe they’re one of the best ways we can support our horses physical and mental wellbeing, especially on smaller properties.

I’d love to see more people talking about them!
