Meet Mel 👋

If you’ve had a delivery from us around Melbourne, chances are you’ve met Mel: our go-to for all things practical on the farm and on the road!

From making up feed bags, mowing, and wrangling the whipper snipper (and yes, even the chainsaw đŸ’Ș), to ensuring your orders arrive safely, Mel keeps things running behind the scenes. She loves the mix of farm days and delivery days, especially with a bit of 3AW on in the van.

But what you might not know
Mel is also an incredibly skilled saddler, with 28 years of experience making show horse gear, racing bridles, dog collars and belts from her home workshop. She even judged saddlery at the 2025 Royal Melbourne Show, and one of her bridles was worn by the winner of the 2023 Melbourne Cup 🏆

When she’s not working, you’ll find her cheering on her kids, Stella & Jasper, at their sports, or enjoying a game of bingo with her friend Tara (who also happens to be our General Manager!) 🎉

We’re pretty lucky to have Mel on the team 💛

Day 5 of building your perfect chicken coop: make it predator-proof

- Use aviary mesh, not chicken wire
- Regularly check for gaps or weak spots
- Add an apron to stop digging underneath or better still, place mesh over the entire floor
- Watch overhead access: foxes can climb and jump

A secure coop = safe, happy hens

Day 4 of the guide to a good chicken coop: Make sure the roof covers the run as well as the coop.

The majority of coops do not have a roof covered run and the bedding and floor becomes wet, damp & host to many a parasite!

Especially in winter, it's important to make sure the hens and the coop are dry.

Day 3 of setting up your coop: make sure your roosts are higher than your nesting boxes.

It’s not always obvious, but hens naturally seek the highest point to sleep at night. And since they do a large portion of their droppings overnight
you definitely don’t want them roosting in the nesting boxes where eggs are laid (yuck!).

Keeping perches higher encourages them to sleep where they should and keeps those nest boxes clean!

Day 2 on the setup of your coop: choosing Aviary wire.

Not all wire is created equal

Aviary mesh = strong, welded, predator-resistant.
Chicken wire = flexible, lightweight, easily broken.

One protects your flock.
The other
 doesn’t.

And the winner of our May Competition is... the wonderful Cath Dunstan!
We absolutely adored this heartwarming and hilarious entry about Miss Lacy, the (very hands-on) turf-laying supervisor. Sounds like she’s quite the character!

Thanks for sharing this gem, Cath. You’ve won a $50 Talking Hens voucher!

Keep your eyes peeled for our next competition in June, it’s so easy to enter 🐓

Here is the very first thing you should invest in if you're thinking about keeping chickens: a solid, well-designed chicken coop.

With so many choices out there, it's important you choose one that will not only last a long time but is well designed and easy for you and the hens to navigate.

The first thing to mention is nesting boxes: Having external access to nesting boxes is best for easier, daily egg collection without disturbing the hens or entering the often messy coop.

Do you have external access to your nesting boxes?
