Coburg Aquarium is the largest leading aquarium in Australia. Coburg Aquarium is a family business that has been in operation for over 30 years.

Starting locally in Coburg in the 1970s by the Long family, Coburg Aquarium has grown into Australia’s premier Aquarium store. While Coburg Aquarium, was purchased by the Kirby family in 2007, we have retained most of the staff, processes and customer service values that the Long family instilled into the business over many years.

🔍 Species Spotlight: Black Moor Goldfish (Carassius auratus)

The Black Moor is a long-standing favorite in the world of fancy goldfish, known for its distinctive velvety black coloration and protruding telescope eyes. As a variety of the telescope goldfish, it’s prized for its unique appearance and calm temperament.

🧪 Care Level: Beginner to Intermediate
📏 Size: Up to 25cm
🌡️ Temperature: 18–24°C
⚖️ pH Range: 6.5–7.5
🐠 Tank Size: Minimum 50L+ per fish; larger for groups

The Black Moor thrives in well-oxygenated, clean environments with minimal flow. Their unique morphology makes them less efficient swimmers, so calm water and open swimming space are essential. While their vision is limited, they are intelligent, interactive fish that recognize routine and caretakers over time.

🐟 Freshwater Species Review 🐟

The Buccochromis rhoadessii is a spectacular cichlid, renowned for its vibrant blue and yellow coloration. Growing up to 40 cm, it requires a spacious tank of at least 250 liters. A carnivorous diet of high-quality pellets, live foods, and occasional frozen treats ensures optimal health and is easy to feed. With proper care, it can live 10-12 years. This species is best suited for intermediate to expert hobbyists due to its aggressive tendencies. Thriving in stable, slightly alkaline conditions, to reduce aggression we suggest keeping 3-4 female to every male and allow plenty of territory!

🐟 Freshwater Species Review! 🐟

Now the Altum Angelfish are certainly special and loved by most keen angelfish keepers. These guys have distinctive elongated fins and are incredibly graceful to watch. Generally peaceful, but they can be territorial when breeding.
They are known to be particularly fussy with water parameters, therefore we suggest more experienced aquarists take these beauties on, but with a stable aquarium, you have happy altum angelfish.

🐟 Freshwater Species Review! 🐟

The Gold Saum Cichlid is best suited for intermediate aquarists due to it's territorial nature. It can be particularly aggressive when breeding, but if your looking for a cichlid with the typical aggressive attitude, then the gold saum is your fish!

They can be tricky to select appropriate tank mates, but keeping them is certainly worthwhile for their stunning appearance, and they remain highly popular.

They are easy to feed and aren't picky eaters. Feed a good variety of live foods, frozen, and pre-prepared for thriving fish.

Albino Hoplo Catfish! 🐱🐟

Check out our albino hoplo's in a feeding frenzy!

Hoplo catfish are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. During the day, they tend to hide in caves, under rocks, or in dense plants to rest. When the lights go down, they come out to forage and explore, using their barbels to sense food.

Tank Mate Thursday!

The humble corydoras catfish, accompanied by the stunning Malanda Gold Rainbowfish compliment each other for the perfect busy planted aquarium. While the malanda gold rainbow fish dart about the aquarium at all levels, the corydoras will happily jitter about the bottom of the aquarium. It's best to keep Malanda Gold Rainbow fish with equally peaceful species, and the corydoras is a standout tank mate for this beautiful and less common rainbowfish.
