We have seen our first Paralysis Tick of this season! Yes, it’s still winter, but Paralysis Ticks are around all year long. August and September have been our worst months in previous years, so don’t get caught out! Make sure your four-legged friends are up to date with tick prevention TODAY!

Urine isn’t supposed to be that colour… 😓

Did you know that male cats are commonly affected by urinary tract disease that can be deadly if not treated?
Their urethra (the tube from the bladder to the outside world) can become blocked, preventing urine from being passed and causing dangerous pressure in the bladder as it fills. This can cause life threatening electrolyte imbalances, kidney damage, and severe pain. The urine appears bloody as the wall of the bladder is stretched and traumatised 😖

This cat had a blockage that was treated by Dr Nikita and Dr Kylie. His bloodwork showed that his kidneys weren’t healthy so he went to the overnight emergency vets for on-going care after his urethra was unblocked.

🦷 Did you know that only a third of the length of a canine tooth is visible above the gum? 🦷 Two thirds of its length is the root encased in the bone of the jaw, and the root is also slightly curved 😯
These factors mean that extraction of a canine tooth involves surgically removing a window of bone around the root.

Pumba needed one of his canine teeth extracted as the crown was fractured, exposing the sensitive pulp cavity that contains blood vessels and nerves. An exposed pulp cavity is painful, and risks bacteria entering the tooth root and the jaw leading to infections.
You can see how long the root of Pumba’s tooth is, and the sutures placed in his gum at the extraction site.
He was a superstar patient and has recovered perfectly!
