💓 What Is an Echocardiogram? 💓

An echocardiogram (or “echo”) is a special ultrasound of the heart — it lets our vets see your pet’s heart in real time! 🫀🐶🐱

Using sound waves, we can watch how the heart beats and how the blood flows through the chambers and valves. This helps us assess heart function and detect any structural problems early on.

What can an echocardiogram diagnose?
Routine Echocardiogram:
🔹 Heart murmurs or valve disease
🔹 Enlarged heart chambers
🔹 Fluid around the heart
Specialist Echocardiograms:
🔹 Congenital (birth) defects
🔹 High blood pressure in the lungs (pulmonary hypertension)

Echocardiograms are non-invasive, painless, and safe — most pets don’t even need sedation. They’re one of the best tools we have for accurately diagnosing and monitoring heart disease. 💙

If your pet has a heart murmur, breathing changes, or reduced energy levels, your vet might recommend an echo to learn more about what’s happening inside their heart.

Early diagnosis = better management = a happier, healthier pet. 🐾💖

Getting to snuggle your adorable puppy or kitten is only PART of the reason why we like to do new pet health checks! 🐾

We also recommend these timely check-ups because they help us ensure your new family member is receiving the right preventative health treatments, plus allow us to assess them for any obvious health issues.

These could include congenital issues (problems that your pet was born with, such as loose kneecaps), husbandry issues (e.g. an unbalanced diet that could affect growth), or infectious diseases (such as fleas or tummy worms). 🐶🐱

For a thorough assessment (and cuddling) of your new pet, book a consult with our friendly vets!

Prior to your pet undergoing a surgical or dental procedure, we may chat to you about pre-anaesthetic blood tests. 💉

Pre-anaesthetic blood tests can give us an indication of a pet’s liver and kidney health and can also help us to check for other problems such as anaemia. This helps us to pre-emptively detect some health issues that could affect your pet’s ability to safely cope with certain anaesthetic drugs or other medications.

Therefore, pre-anaesthetic blood tests are a useful “peace of mind check” for any pet, but are particularly recommended for older pets or those more likely to have underlying health conditions.

For more information on our anaesthesia safety policies, consult our experienced vets. 🐾

Just like in people, omega-3 fatty acids have great health benefits for pets! 🐱

Appropriate doses of omega-3 fatty acids support your pet’s cardiovascular, brain and skin health and will reduce inflammation, which can help control arthritis, kidney disease, allergic symptoms and more.

However, simply feeding your cat some fish a few times a week may not allow them to take in the therapeutic omega-3 quantities required for maximal health benefits. 🐟

For personalised advice on an effective and safe fish oil dose for your pet, consult our supplement-savvy team.

Snake Season Alert: Please Be Prepared!

We’ve seen a significant increase in snake envenomation cases recently — especially from Eastern Brown Snakes and Red-bellied Black Snakes. As the weather warms up, snakes become more active, and curious pets are often the first to find them.

💡 What you should know:
- Eastern Brown Snakes are highly venomous. Even a small bite can cause life-threatening bleeding disorders and collapse within minutes to hours.
- Red-bellied Black Snakes can also be highly venomous. Their bites can cause muscle damage, bleeding, and pain — and can still be fatal without treatment.

⏱️ Early treatment saves lives!
If you suspect your pet has been bitten:
- Do not wait for symptoms. They can appear suddenly and worsen very quickly.
- Keep your pet calm and carry them — avoid walking to reduce venom spread.
- Call us immediately so our team can prepare antivenom and supportive care before you arrive.

Quick action and veterinary care can make all the difference. Please stay vigilant, especially if you live near bushland, long grass, or water sources.
If you’re unsure or worried your pet may have been bitten, call us straight away — it’s always better to be safe.

We’ve seen a few pet-parents get tripped up by misleading pet food labels, so our team would love to put out a PSA (Pet Service Announcement)! 📢

Unless your pet’s food is a specially formulated “Single Protein Diet”, it’s likely that the protein listed on the front of the packet (e.g. chicken, beef or fish) is just a flavour, and the food will contain other protein types too.

So, if you think your dog or cat may have a food-related sensitivity or allergy that is causing recurrent tummy upset or skin irritations, it’s best to consult our veterinary team for personalised advice on how to carry out a safe and effective hypoallergenic dietary trial. 🐾

Vet Nurse Day 2025 💚

Yesterday was a very busy day for us — just the way we like it — as we celebrated Vet Nurse Day 2025!

It is our greatest hope that our incredible nursing team truly know how important and appreciated they are.

From our Customer Care team — thank you for effortlessly sliding into the role of receptionist whenever needed.

From our Veterinary team — thank you for your calm presence, sharp eyes, and endless patience. We rely on you for individual patient care when our attention is pulled in all directions; for knowing exactly where everything lives in the clinic (and tidying up after the chaos we leave behind!); for your wise suggestions and clinical knowledge; and for spotting subtle changes in our anaesthetised patients when our hands are tied in surgery.

Simply put, we couldn’t do this without you — because everyone knows that two vets do not equal one vet plus one awesome nurse! 💚

We’ve noticed a recent trend of owners being encouraged to feed their dogs blueberries as a regular component of their diet. ❓🐶

Blueberries are safe for dogs and, being high in fibre, antioxidants and vitamins A, C and K, they can be a yummy, natural, health-boosting snack too. 🫐

But does your dog need to eat blueberries every day? No – provided they’re already eating a quality, complete and balanced diet. So, if blueberries are a bit pricey in the shops, save them for a special, healthy treat for your pet!

For more pet dietary advice, consult our nutritionally-knowledgeable team.

Do you know why cats can’t survive on dog food long-term? 🐱

It’s because dog food doesn’t contain enough taurine to meet feline nutritional requirements. Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats, meaning it must be supplied in adequate levels in their diet because they have a limited ability to produce it within their body.

A deficiency of taurine in your cat’s diet will eventually lead to degeneration in their eye and heart health. ❤️

For advice on a complete, balanced diet for your cat, consult our feline-friendly team.

🧼 Does your pet have itchy or inflamed skin, particularly as the weather begins to warm? Prescription or medicated shampoos can help manage allergic skin disease and soothe irritation.

There are lots of different types of shampoos depending on your pet’s particular needs. Ask us if a medicated wash could benefit your pet’s skin health. 🐶

🦶 Licking or redness between your dog’s toes can be caused by allergies, grass seeds, injuries or infections. In Spring, we see an increase in both allergic skin disease as well as injuries caused by penetrating grass seeds.

Dogs with particularly hairy feet and toes tend to be at increased risk. Persistent irritation to your pet’s skin should be checked by a vet without delay, as early treatment can prevent worse outcomes. ✅
