🔊Sound Up. We are blessed to have so many koalas but I despise mating season. It's brutal. This male koala has been named Donald. This has been going for a couple of hours...I'm going to have to go out.

With so much human induced suffering in the world it's hard to fathom adding another layer of cruelty. Yes, ecosystems need preservation but we can put people in space so we should be able to come up with a better system than aerial culling.

Just had a great chat with Hugh from Billi Goat Gardening. He kindly came to check out some jobs we need doing around the place. Has some great kit that means he can clean up some of the steep/wet/gnarly spots on your block. Also revive pot holey gravel drives. Give him a call if you need a hand. Something tells me he will NOT feature in my weekly episode of things I broke or bogged this week😅

Bear is currently enjoying his meals in the 'private dining room' aka the round yard 😆. Some of our more senior residents take longer to eat than some of the others due to compromised dentition. To keep everyone calm and relaxation meal time we use separators...sometimes the round yard, often nosebags and sometimes hot gates. I'd love to hear ideas on how you feed groups with different needs?

Keeping with the bug theme...we've encountered quite a few of these giant wood moths lately...they are the moth witchetty grubs grow into 🧐. One of the biggest moths in the world, with adult females up to 30g with a wingspan of 23 cm. I saw magpies fighting over one the other day and though they had a baby bird, it was so big. This one isn't that huge. The larvae burrow into eucalyptus trees... never seen them before this year...wonder if it's the extra trees that we've planted? Love how they have an image of a moth on their heads.

My favourite farm helpers 🪲. Meet Onitis viridulus , or the emerald dungbeetle. These guys break down and bury horsepoo like teenagers eat burgers or sushi post surfing. They take nutrients into the soil, and the holes they create mean the rain gets below the surface. It's a big part of the reason we include 2 x faecal egg counts per year when your horse lives at Okey Dokey Farm. Worming unnecessarily (i.e., when count is low or nil) wipes these guys out and builds parasite resistance. If/When we do need to worm, we yard horses and collect manure in an attempt to safeguard our unpaid paddock clean-up crew. If you want some, you can purchase them . Our population has been knocked around after so many wet years ..I may need a top-up 🙂.
