𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 & 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐆𝐔𝐒 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞

🩺 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
• Omeprazole paste/injection reduces stomach acid production, allowing ulcers to heal
• Injectable omeprazole may provide more consistent acid suppression in some horses
• Sucralfate coats and protects ulcerated areas, especially useful for glandular ulcers
• These medications are supported by scientific studies and have proven healing rates when used correctly under veterinary guidance

🌿 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗨𝗹𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Often contain ingredients such as:
• Lecithin & pectin
• Antacids/buffers
• Aloe vera
• Seaweed/calcium products
• Pre/probiotics

These products aim to support or protect the stomach lining, but most do not directly stop acid production or reliably heal established ulcers.

While some horses may appear to improve on supplements, there is currently limited scientific evidence proving they consistently heal gastric ulcers in all horses. Supplements may help management, but they are not a replacement for proper diagnosis and veterinary treatment.

𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺:
Veterinary diagnosis + appropriate medication + management changes (more forage, reduced stress, feeding adjustments, turnout).

Many horses with ulcers don’t show dramatic signs.
Sometimes they simply seem tense, flat, girthy, reactive or “not quite themselves.”

While supplements may support stomach health, established ulcers often require prescription treatment under veterinary guidance.

And the only way to know for certain what’s happening inside the stomach is through gastroscopy.

Because a comfortable horse is a happier horse 🐴

We are very excited to have not just one, but two wonderful vets joining our team. We can’t wait for our clients and patients to meet Catalina and see the care, knowledge, and passion she brings to the practice.

Catalina is originally from Chile, where she has worked mainly with racehorses, focusing on reproduction, breeding, and radiography. Her main interests are equine reproduction and neonatology, and is keen to further her learning in internal medicine.

Catalina says working as a veterinarian in Australia has always been a dream, and it’s very special to see it coming true alongside my little family — Ale, Luca and Kiki — who are my biggest support on the most challenging days. I’m really enjoying learning from the team at GPE and look forward to continuing to grow here!

We would like to welcome Jane to the Golden Plains Equine team. We are very excited to have Jane join our fabulous team of vets, and we can't wait for you to meet her!

Hailing from the other side of the ditch, Jane’s passion for becoming a veterinarian began at just four years old. She grew up riding with her aunty in Coatesville, New Zealand, and developed a strong interest in large animal practice early on. Jane graduated with honours from Charles Sturt University in 2020, followed by completion of a 13-month rotating internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital where she gained experience across anaesthesia, internal medicine, surgery, lameness, and reproduction. Jane then spent 4.5 years practising at as an equine vet in North-East Victoria, and in 2025 passed her Membership examinations in the Medicine of Horses with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. She has a particular interest in equine internal medicine and advanced reproduction. Jane’s interests outside of horses includes camping, running, French, cooking, and spending time with her husband Pat and their dog, Freya. They have set up shop in beautiful Torquay and are thoroughly enjoying coastal life!

After 6.5 wonderful years, we are saying goodbye to Jade as she leaves Golden Plains Equine to return home to Belgium to be closer to her family.

Jade first joined the clinic as an intern, and over the years her dedication, hard work, and passion for equine care saw her grow into an invaluable member of our team and eventually a business partner.

Jade says she has loved working alongside our incredible clients, patients, and team, and will greatly miss the friendships and memories made here. While we are sad to see her go, we completely understand that home is calling.

Please join us in thanking Jade for everything she has given to Golden Plains Equine and wishing her all the very best for this next chapter back in Belgium. 🇧🇪✨

Gastric ulcers are common in horses and can cause subtle signs such as poor performance, irritability, reduced appetite or weight loss.

A gastroscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing gastric ulcers allowing us to assess the stomach accurately and tailor treatment where needed.

💡 What’s Included:
✔️ Sedation
✔️ Gastroscopy procedure (15–30 mins)
✔️ Vet consultation and personalised treatment plan
✔️ A copy of the scope video (please bring a USB)

🏠 Need help fasting?
Overnight stabling available for $50 if you cannot fast at home.

⚠️ Fasting Instructions:
▪️ Withhold feed for 12–16 hours before the procedure
▪️ Remove water 4–5 hours beforehand
▪️ Don’t forget to switch off any automatic waterers

👏 Congratulations to the McKenzie Park team on their fantastic results at the Adelaide Equestrian Festival!

Young rider LaMoza Velisha and her talented horses, Call Me Cooley and Ophelie van Prinseveld, took on Adelaide in the CCI3*-L with outstanding performances.

LaMoza and Ophelie van Prinseveld secured an impressive 2nd place, while Call Me Cooley finished a strong 10th. LaMoza and Call Me Cooley were also part of the winning Australian Team in the 2026 Oceania Championship Under 25! 🇦🇺

It truly takes a team to produce and compete horses at FEI level, and we’re incredibly proud to be part of McKenzie Park’s journey.

Most importantly, both horses finished the event happy, sound, and looking fantastic at the final trot-up ❤️
