Welcome to Perrys Stockfeed & Saddlery

In 1937, Richard Stanley “Stan” Perry established a local chaff cutting contracting business. In the mid 1940’s he then started pressing hay and in 1952 he bought a pickup bailer and was now cutting chaff and bailing hay and also supply stores in Melbourne as well as the local farmers through to the 1970’s. He now had the help from his sons Owen, Stuart & De

nnis. He then purchased a property at 5 Market Street, Kyneton known as R.S. Perry & Sons, and opened the Hay and Grain Store. As the business was progressively growing (1974-75) a block was purchased on Edgecombe Road and in 1978 Perrys Chaff Mill was built and the chaff cutter relocated to its new home. In the 1980’s various works were done at the mill with the construction of a new hay shed and with expansions to product lines and introducing some saddlery products, renovations were made to the shop. In the 1990’s Perrys Stockfeed expanded even more, supplying other companies throughout Victoria and expanding its saddlery line to what it is today - Perrys Stockfeed & Saddlery.

Spring is surely coming, so it's time to lock in your early spring FECs at the following stores ⬇
It's important to get horses checked in early spring as the damp and warm weather starts, to get on top of high egg shedders to limit pasture larvae contamination.

Occasionally, my microscope and my phone camera will cooperate, and I can manage to get a lovely photo down the eye-piece. Two eggs: one equine tapeworm and one strongyle, at approximately 1000x magnification.

Clients sometimes ask me “should I get a Tapeworm FEC done?” and I don’t particularly like answering, because I have a small demon on each shoulder (as opposed to one demon and one angel) and they will want to answer either “Yes – please give me more money, I enjoying being able to pay my bills” or “No – these FECs are tedious and boring to perform”.
Instead, here are the risk factors that if your horse fits, they should get a tapeworm FEC done:
- Have not been dewormed (with praziquantel) in 5 – 6 months
- On a property with tapeworm in the past
- On a property (e.g. agistment) where the presence of tapeworm is unknown
- On a property (e.g. agistment/studs/trainers) with lots of movement of different horses
- Has gone off property for a period of time (stud, training)

Lastly, a note on this tapeworm FEC: I developed this method using research from my PhD work, plus methodologies from other published studies. Tapeworms don’t shed eggs to the extent of other horse worms, so they can be missed on a normal FEC. This TW FEC is far more sensitive at detecting tapeworm than a normal FEC (can detect down to less than 1EPG), and similar methods have been shown to reliably detect tapeworm burdens that may be considered problematic, which a standard FEC will miss approximately half the time.
