🐄 Do you have a PIC for your property? 🐴🐑

A Property Identification Code (PIC) is an eight-character code used to identify properties where livestock and certain animals are kept.
Having a PIC is free and is required for properties with livestock.
Why is a PIC important?
🔹 Traceability – helps track livestock movements for food safety and disease control.
🔹 Emergency response – helps authorities contact property owners during bushfires, floods and other emergencies.
🔹 Compliance – may be required when keeping animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses or alpacas — even on smaller lifestyle properties.
🏡 New animals? New property? It’s a good time to check that your PIC is registered and your details are up to date.

With the current threat of avian influenza (bird flu), McIntyre Vets is taking extra precautions when assessing birds.
This includes pet birds and native wildlife. 🐦
To help reduce the risk of transmission, please follow these important steps:
🚗 Please leave your bird in the car on arrival.
📞 Contact front reception to let us know you have arrived.
👩‍⚕️ A veterinarian will assess your bird outside.
🥼 Our veterinary team will be wearing protective gear to help reduce the risk of transmission.

These precautions help protect your bird, other patients and our veterinary team. ❤️

🛁🐶 Bath Time! Why the Right Shampoo Matters

Giving your pet a bath can be a great way to keep their coat clean and fresh — but more bathing isn’t always better! 🐾

Over-bathing can strip the natural oils from your dog’s skin and may lead to dryness, irritation or itchiness. Most healthy dogs only need bathing when they are dirty or as recommended by your veterinarian.

🐶 Dog-specific shampoo and conditioner are designed for a dog’s skin and coat. Human shampoos can be too harshor have the wrong acidity and may disrupt their natural skin barrier.

A few bath-time tips:

🛁 Use lukewarm water
🧴 Choose a quality dog-specific shampoo and conditioner
🚿 Rinse thoroughly to remove all product (except for certain conditioner designed to be left on the coat.)
👂 Try to keep shampoo and water out of their ears and eyes
🌬️ Dry them well, especially around the ears and between their toes
⚠️ Avoid over-bathing — let your dog’s natural skin oils do their job!

If your dog has itchy, sensitive or problematic skin, they may need a veterinary-recommended shampoo or a different bathing routine.

🐾 Has your pet just had surgery? Now it’s time to help them recover. 💙

The first 24 hours after desexing are important. Here’s how you can help your furry friend recover comfortably:

🛏 Keep them indoors and quiet – avoid running, swimming, jumping and rough play.

🐾 Check the surgical site – slight swelling can be normal, but there shouldn’t be more than a few drops of bleeding or discharge.

🍽 Offer a small meal and water – their appetite may be reduced after surgery and large meals can cause intestinal upsets.

💤 Let them rest – drowsiness is common following anaesthesia.

🚫 Prevent excessive licking or chewing – When persistent licking is a problem use an Elizabethan collar (cone), available for purchase at the clinic.
