Meet MJ the goat 🐐💙

MJ recently visited us at Kilcoy Vet Practice for his castration cryptorchid procedure, and he was an absolute legend throughout his stay! Dr Kevin and the team were excited for MJ and made sure he was comfortable from admission through to recovery.

What is a Cryptorchid you may be asking? It is when one or both testicles that haven’t descended into the sc***um as they normally should. Instead of being in the sc***um, the retained testicle can be located in the abdomen or the groin area. Because the testicle is not in the usual position, a standard castration isn’t possible. Therefore, the surgery is more complex as it is necessary to locate and remove the retained testicle.

It’s important to treat cryptorchid animals because retained testicles can lead to health problems such as a higher risk of tumours/cancers and unwanted hormone-driven behaviours. Once removed, the animal can live a healthier and more comfortable life.

On the photos you can see how small the retained testicle is. Normally it is larger than the palm of your hand.

If you have any questions about procedures like this or your animal’s health, feel free to get in touch with our team!

Great job, MJ you were a superstar! ✨

Happy Pets: Why Dental Care Matters 🐾

Dental disease is one of the most common (and overlooked) health issues in pets. By age three, many dogs and cats already show signsstarting with plaque and bad breath, and potentially leading to pain, infections, and even organ damage if untreated.

Signs to watch for:
• Bad breath
• Red or sore gums
• Trouble eating
• Loose or damaged teeth
• Changes in appetite or behavior

Good dental care can make a huge difference—many pets feel happier and more energetic after treatment.

What’s involved in a dental procedure?
A full check of teeth and gums, cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, polishing, and treatment if needed—all done under anaesthesia for comfort.

Prevention is key:
• Brush teeth regularly (pet-safe toothpaste)
• Use dental treats or special diets
• Schedule routine vet checks

Free dental checks at Kilcoy Vet Clinic
Our nurses can assess your pet’s teeth, spot early issues, and give tailored advice on home care.

Noticed bad breath or just want peace of mind? Get your pet checked and keep their smile healthy.

After careful reevaluation of our business needs, Kilcoy Vet Practice will be making some changes to our grooming services.

We have decided to discontinue routine grooming clips. However, we will continue to offer grooming for pets who require sedation, including dog clips and cat clips where sedation is necessary for their comfort and safety.

The good news is we’re still here to help keep your pets looking and feeling their best! We will continue to offer nail trims and bathing services.

We appreciate your understanding and ongoing support as we focus on providing the highest level of care for our patients. If you have any questions or would like to book a service, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
