Sound advice for trauma season
🌼 September 1st, the first day of Spring signifies the beginning of trauma season for our wildlife.
☀️ The upcoming beautiful sunny days and abundance of food spark a flurry of activity. Our native wildlife are on the move!
- Defending territory
- Courting
- Building nests & reproducing
- Reptiles will be coming out of brumation
- Youngsters will be learning the ways of the world & young birds will be setting their wings to the sky for the very first time.
This is the busiest time of year for rescuers & wildlife hospitals across the country who will experience an influx of patient admissions due to:
- Road accidents
- Domestic animal attacks
- Window strikes
- Orphanhood & kidnapping.
- Misadventure
This trauma season:
- Be sure to save the number for your local wildlife rescue team ☎️
- Be rescue ready by keeping a box & towel in the car 📦
- Slow down & stay alert at dusk & dawn 🚗
- Never handle dangerous animals such as snakes, bats, raptors & adult kangaroos ❌🐍🦇🦅🦘❌
- If you encounter an animal in distress, place it in a box, keep it warm, dark & quiet & transport it to your nearest vet or wildlife hospital. 📦 🚑 🏥
- Do not offer food or water to sick/injured wildlife 🙊
- Check deceased marsupials for pouch young 🦘
- Before rescuing a baby bird, stand back & watch for its parents. They are often not far away 🐣
