Skypuppy School

Skypuppy School Dog training for confident dogs and happy humans! Emphasis is placed on play & relationship building.

Skypuppy School emphasises engagement, relationship, and play as the foundation of dog training. We prioritise social responsibility and practical skills over traditional obedience. Our mission is to build trust and communication between dogs and their humans by educating owners about their furry friends' behaviour and how to develop a strong bond. Skypuppy School offers small group classes in Canberra and plans to hold private training sessions in 2024 to enhance play and engagement techniques.

A new Primary Connections is starting on June 22nd I've not been able to run puppy classes this term, so I'm really excited for this 4-week course that's aimed at younger dogs.

Instead of drilling strict obedience commands, we focus on what really matters for everyday life:

✨ Understanding Motivation: Learn what makes your dog tick and how to use play to build a strong bond. ✨ Setting Expectations: Help your dog learn when it’s playtime, when it’s time to train, and when it’s time to switch off and be calm. ✨ Recall Foundations: Start building a reliable, enthusiastic comeback when called.

This class is for you if:

Your dog is between 12 weeks and 6 months old.

You just finished puppy preschool and want the next step.

You missed out on preschool and need a friendly introductory class.

You can book a spot now via the Skypuppy School website. Don't wait, this is a small group class and there are just 3 spots left!

Primary Connections is now open for bookings! I’m running this round by demand and tailoring it specifically for puppies aged 12 weeks to 6 months.

We’ll build clear communication, engagement through play, arousal regulation, and the early foundations of a reliable recall. All indoors at The Canine Campus in Hume.

Spots are capped at 5 teams. Class starts June 22nd, and you can book directly online. New students are welcome.

If you want more control, you have to let some of it go!

Dog trainers love talking about what we can do for your dogs, I mean ... that’s the job. But here’s the part we don’t say enough: working with your dogs gives us something too.

If you’ve been here a while, you know Watson 🤎
He started with me for weekly enrichment walks, and over time it’s become a solid routine for both of us.

I usually walk Watson after my very full‑on day job, and honestly, I think I'm the one who's getting my emotions regulated these days via our sessions. 😄

It's just so nice to hang out with a dog who understands the system we've built together, clarity that only really comes from consistency and time spent together. So thanks buddy, I appreciate you!

Here’s a PSA on behalf of all dogs.

Stop correcting your dog for sniffing.

Stop it. Please.

How would you like it if I corrected you for looking around a room? Imagine if you raised your head to look around a new place and I popped you or shoved you or said “HEY! PAY ATTENTION TO ME” You’d get pretty upset pretty quickly I’d imagine.

Dogs don’t smell because they are ignoring you or being stubborn. We humans primarily depend on sight, but dogs use smell AND sight to assess their surroundings and communicate. People spend more time interpreting visual data than olfactory information. Dogs are just the opposite.

Dogs devote lots of brain power to interpreting smells. They have more than 100 million sensory receptor sites in the nasal cavity as compared to 6 million in people, and the area of the canine brain devoted to analyzing odors is about 40 times larger than the comparable part of the human brain. In fact, it’s been estimated that dogs can smell anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 times better than people.

Scent gives information. Smelling is normal. Smelling is necessary and natural. Smelling is relaxing. Air scenting is HUGE for recovering reactive dogs. LET YOUR DOG SMELL!

Correcting a dog for sniffing is one of the worst things I watch people do. It’s another example of how controlling we try to be in our dogs lives. If you don’t want your dog to smell, teach him to focus on you instead for PART of the time, and then give other ample opportunities to smell. Walks on a long line on a dirt road or in a field for your dog to zig zag back and forth on to smell is MUCH healthier and more tiring for them as animals than trying to keep them within 6 feet of you on a neighborhood walk.

Please accept that smelling is normal and work WITH your dog on it, rather than just trying to suppress it. Just because that blade of grass or tree isn’t interesting to YOU doesn’t mean your dog deserves a correction. Who cares if you don’t walk the extra block - spend those 5 minutes on that one tree if you need to. Your dog doesn’t complain when you watch YouTube videos of kittens for hours or read the news or binge on Netflix, so let him get his scent binge in to.

Happy smelling pups!
