One of the biggest misconceptions I see in the breeding world is how much influence people attribute to the stallion versus the mare.
Owning both stallions and mares, and raising their progeny through to riding age, has given me a unique perspective on what each contributes to the next generation. I've been fortunate enough to watch those influences unfold over many years, rather than simply at foaling, and it's been fascinating to see which traits seem to be inherited, and which are moulded by the mare during those early months.
Let's start with temperament.
As a stallion owner, I often see breeders comment on how their stallion's beautiful temperament is passed down through future generations. While both parents contribute genetically, I've found the mare's influence on a foal's day-to-day behaviour is often underestimated.
The mare is the one who raises the foal until weaning. She shapes its early manners, behaviours, tolerance levels, ability to self-regulate, and its responses to the world around it. From the moment the foal is born, the mare is constantly teaching and imprinting. In most cases, the stallion will never even meet his foals and has little to no influence on their outward behaviour.
Time and time again, I've noticed the same quirks, sensitivities, reactions and responses appear in mares and then again in their foals.
So, what does the stallion bring to the mix?
The stallion contributes a great deal to the foal's genetic foundation. Structure, movement, athletic ability, and a good, trainable mind are all qualities that can be passed on. Even with the very same mare and stallion combination, every mating produces its own unique genetic mix, which is why full siblings can look, think and perform very differently.
If you're hoping to fix the poor work ethic or attitude of a cranky mare by breeding her to a stallion with a "good temperament"... you're probably going to be disappointed.
My advice to anyone looking to breed a foal would be this.
Start by taking an honest look at your mare. Does she have the disposition, conformation and mindset you'd be happy to reproduce? Has she been ridden? What was she like under saddle? How does she behave in a herd? Is she a lead mare or a follower? Is she a sensitive over-thinker, or a relaxed and confident type?
Then ask yourself how your mare is bred, what she has successfully been used for, and what you hope to do with the foal.
Do you want to compete? Trail ride? Ride endurance? Work cattle? Show jump?
These questions are important because they play a major role in the future success of the progeny. If your mare doesn't already possess the qualities that suit your long-term goals, breeding her to a stallion that does won't necessarily produce the horse you're hoping for.
Once you have a good understanding of what your mare brings to the table, you can then start shopping for the right stallion.
If you're planning to ride the progeny, I'd strongly recommend choosing a stallion that has, at the very least, proven himself under saddle. Seeing a stallion perform as a ridden horse tells you a lot about his mindset, trainability and work ethic.
If you're breeding for competition, look for bloodlines that have already proven themselves in your chosen discipline. The best predictor of future success is often generations of horses that have already excelled in the job you're asking your foal to do.
Understanding the influence of both genetics and environment is one of the first steps towards breeding a horse that will be a pleasure to train, ride, compete with and simply have around for years to come.
Because at the end of the day, breeding isn't about finding the perfect stallion. It's about understanding your mare first, then choosing the stallion that complements her.
