I don’t normally make these post, but today I saw these “Jerky” treats marked down in the supermarket, and I looked at the ingredients and I was shocked 🤯 at just how much crap was actually in these things. See as a treat maker I never look at the dog treats, cause I don’t remember the last time I bought them 🤔.
So I thought I would buy them and break it down and compare the two and explain why there is a difference and why my prices might seam a little on the high side.
The first think I look at is the first ingredient. This should be the most prominent ingredient in the product. In the case of this store bought item, the main ingredient is chicken but 27%! Interesting considering the label states it is a “real chicken strip”. 🤔
The next is beef, but no indication of how much. So not a true chicken stick.
Then we have Oats, which is fine, I use them, they are good for fibre. But I don’t use them in my Jerky
Now the next 4 ingredients basically all do the same. They are all a sort of binder. Why do you need a binder in Jerky 🤷♀️
Then you have Carrot - nice, but how much?
Rice flour - another binding agent. Now we are up to 5 filler/binding/bulking agents
Gelatine. Yep good but in jerky?
Cellulose. Again another bulking agent
Natural Chicken Flavour. Well maybe because we have all these fillers, we need to add flavour
Then we have a natural preservative.
Xantham Gum - another thickening agent.
Acetic acid - apple cider vinegar
Vegetable oil
Natural colour
Antioxidants
Now that is a long list of ingredients for a real chicken strip.
This is the ingredients for my chicken strip:
Chicken breast
That is it folks. Just pure meat. I don’t use fillers, colours, flavours or other s**t to fill out my treats. It is what it is.
I am I one women operation 95% of the time (thank you to my wonderful family who help when they can) I do all the slicing, dicing, rolling , backing, packaging etc to make this thing work
I put in the research, sleepless nights making sure what I produce is healthy and beneficial to the animal. This is why when you buy from me is does cost a bit more.
I know this post is long & I thank you if you got this far. Thanks for your support ❤️
