But does Equine Assisted Therapy actually work? 🐴
It’s a fair question, especially if you’ve never experienced therapy alongside horses before.
Research into equine assisted therapeutic approaches is growing, with studies suggesting promising outcomes in areas including anxiety, trauma and PTSD symptoms, depression, mindfulness, emotional wellbeing and social emotional functioning.
Equine Assisted Therapy is an experiential approach to therapy, creating opportunities to explore what is happening in the here and now, rather than only talking about our experiences.
Alongside a qualified therapist, interactions with horses can create opportunities to notice:
• How we approach and connect with others
• What happens when we experience uncertainty or discomfort
• How we communicate our needs and boundaries
• What we notice happening within our body
• Patterns that may emerge within relationships
• Our capacity to slow down, stay present and make different choices
Being outside and having the option to move, pause, observe or simply share space with a horse can feel very different from sitting across from someone in a traditional therapy room.
The horse isn’t a tool used to “fix” someone. They are a living, responsive participant within the therapeutic environment, with their own boundaries, preferences and choices.
Research in this field is still developing but the growing evidence is encouraging, particularly when equine assisted work is facilitated by appropriately qualified practitioners and integrated within an established therapeutic approach.
For people who find traditional room based or primarily talk based therapy difficult to engage with, an experiential approach can offer another way of exploring themselves, their relationships and their experiences.
