❄️ Winter Tip! Remove rugs regularly to monitor your horse's body condition. This is one of the most useful ways to monitor the effectiveness of your feeding program.

Condition scoring involves observing specific areas on your horse's body for fat coverage. There are 6 key areas we assess: the neck, withers, shoulders, ribs, loin and tailhead.

Tip: Make sure you use your hands when condition scoring! Fluffy winter coats may hide some weight loss. So, it's important to physically apply pressure to feel for fat (which will feel soft and spongy) or lack of fat, across these areas.
So, get rugs off as often as you can (daily is best) to check to see if your horse is losing, maintaining or gaining weight. This will allow you to adjust their diet quickly if you detect an unwanted change.
