Fish Tank Maintenance Basics:
A happy Tank = happy fish. Keeping your aquarium in top shape doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are the basics every fish keeper should know:
1. Partial water changes (weekly)
Change 10-25% of the water each week to remove waste and keep water chemistry stable. Always use a water conditioner to make tap water safe for fish.
2. Test your water
Ammonia and nitrite should be zero, and nitrates should stay low. Regular testing helps prevent problems before your fish start showing stress.
3. Clean glass and decorations
Algae happens! Use an algae scraper or sponge to keep the glass clear. Rinse decorations in old tank water to protect beneficial bacteria.
4. Maintain your filter
Your filter is the heart of your tank. Rinse filter media in a bucket of tank water so you don’t kill the healthy bacteria that keeps the nitrogen cycle running smoothly.
5. Check equipment
Make sure heaters, thermometers, and air pumps are working properly. Stable temperature = less stress for your fish.
6. Don’t overfeed
Overfeeding is one of the biggest causes of poor water quality. Feed only what your fish can eat within a couple of minutes.
Consistency is key. A little maintenance each week is much easier than fixing a major tank crash later.
