Do you own a Dachshund or are you looking at adding one to your family? This webinar, hosted by our friends at SASH - Small Animal Specialist Hospital, will be a must watch for you. While they are super cute and can be a great addition to a family, we still see so many people who are unaware of some of their specific needs as a breed.
Link to the webinar is in the comments section of the original post.

Join us for a practical, evidence-based webinar focusing on keeping your Dachshund strong, healthy, and less prone to spinal disease (IVDD). We'll cover the lifestyle factors that matter most, simple home strategies, diet and supplements, and whether ramps and activity restrictions really make a difference. This webinar is a must watch for Dachshund owners who want to support their dog’s long-term wellbeing without the guesswork.

Dr Naomi Boyd is the only dual qualified person in Australia to be both a Veterinary Sports Medicine Specialist and a Physiotherapist. She is one of the best positioned individuals to provide information to help Dachshund owners with preventative strategies for life-long painless mobility.

Attention!
There have been confirmed cases of Leptospirosis in dogs in the Southern Highlands and South Coast.
This disease can be spread by rodents and contaminated water. There is an effective vaccination available to prevent this disease. To confirm your animal is up to date or book in for a vaccination please contact us on 48211966.

Four dogs have died from canine leptospirosis, with two confirmed in the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven.

The serious bacterial disease is spread by rats and contaminated water and can cause liver and kidney failure.

Some of the symptoms include vomiting or diarrhea and lethargy.

Dog owners in the Southern Highlands and South coast are being urged to have their pets vaccinated and to avoid letting them drink or swim in stagnant water.

The Months of July and August, are our favorite time of year! Dental Months!🎉

During these months we offer a:
✔️ FREE nurse dental check by our trained Veterinary Nurses to discuss:
✔️ A Dental care plan or
✔️The necessity for a dental procedure.

To help with the cost of these procedures STVH is offering a $250 voucher that will go towards the dental. This will only be valid until the end of August 2025

If a dental is recommended it includes a general anesthetic, dental x-rays, scale and polish. Extractions may be necessary if broken or loose teeth are present, severe gum disease or Xray evidence of root disease.

After the dental you will receive a homecare plan to get the gums to heal, help with pain and importantly prevention.

Our Vet team has been busssyy.

Dr Maddy has been studying busily for her membership in Small Animal Medicine with senior mentors Dr Mandy and Dr Richard to help with her tricky cases and quick questions. A combined 80 years of experience (scary).

She’s embarked on her writing career shown here with her first article in the 100 year edition of the Centre for Veterinary Education magazine. A helpful addition to “What is your diagnosis?”

As ever STVH continues to have an investigative approach whether it be thymomas with myasthenia gravis causing megaoesophagus and aspiration pneumonia (see Xray on the monitor). Dr Maddy is the vet for your tricky medical cases.

✨Princess Penny turns 9 today, Hooray!🎉

We want to congratulate her and her lovely family (human and 4 legged) for all the care in following our advice and being vigilant with any issues with her illness.

Penny is a dachshund and has SMND Sarcoglycan Deficient Muscular Dystrophy, a form of muscular dystrophy affecting miniature dachshunds. This genetic condition is caused by a mutation in a muscle sarcoglycan gene, leading to muscle weakness and other symptoms. DNA testing is available to identify affected dogs and carriers, allowing breeders to make informed decisions to minimize the spread of the disease

Affected dogs may show signs like exercise intolerance, stiff gait, and difficulty swallowing, typically appearing around six months of age.

Penny requires care and many medications for her mobility and feeding to avoid aspiration pneumonia.

She wags her tail as she comes in for her visits with Dr Mandy and is a good sport when taking her pills or having oxygen therapy.

All at STVH love her dearly. 💕
