When bringing a new ferret into the house, be sure there are at least: 1 ½ hammocks per ferret in the cage, one litter box per ferret in the cage & each room and 1 bed/sleep spot per ferret in each room. Have food and water available outside the cage and in two or three places in the cage.

If you’re bringing home a ferret and are unsure if they’re going to get along, take your time letting the ferrets get used to each other. If possible, keep them in a separate cage or room for 2-3 days or even longer.

Let the new ferret out first, so he can get used to the different smells. Once the new ferret is asleep, put it away and let the established ferret out. This lets your ferret get used to the smell of the new ferret in its territory.

After a day or two, if all is going well, let your ferret out alone. When it falls asleep, let out the new ferret. If there are no fights, let them stay out together. Do it this way for a second day and then they should be good to go.

If they do fight, tell the aggressive ferret no and put it in a different area. Don't yell at, shake or hit the ferret. This can cause aggressiveness. If it happens again, tell it no and put it in a cage or pet carrier for about 30 seconds. They get the picture quickly when confined. If roughness persists, confine to the cage or carrier again, for about a minute. Continue to confine to the cage or carrier up to two minutes. If you confine for more than two minutes, the ferret won’t remember why it’s confined and you lose the reason for putting it there. This is important.

Ferrets have different personalities. It may be one ferret is just going to be too much for the other ferret or it has more energy and stamina. In that case, they should not be kept together or allowed out at the same time.
