‼️Pet Dog Registration Fees ‼️ - Did you know they're set to double in Victoria? 🔺 Did you know a portion of your pet registration should be allocated to pet education?

"Victorian pet owners will soon be hit with higher registration fees, with the Allan government doubling charges for cats, dogs and greyhounds from July. The state says the increase, expected to raise around $10 million, will help fund RSPCA operations, animal welfare programs and pet ownership education."

🔺 Pet Education? Now that's something I care a lot about! Here's the thing; late last year Kingston Council ended our hall hire at the Carrum Community Hall, effectively ending our pet dog education classes! For 25 years I delivered classes, with not one complaint! Despite offering to pay more for hire, Council wanted classes ended.

If you believe education for pet dog owners is important, please sign our petition. Despite dozens of letters from industry professionals, City of Kingston refused to allow us to continue to deliver classes. With more & more fatal/near fatal dog attacks, we need more education on dog management, not less!

🔺 Fact! - Did you also know that if you receive appropriate training from a Delta Society Qualified Cert IV Trainer, you can claim discounted pet registration? BUT! we need community venues to deliver training! It is beyond frustrating and not helping pet dog owners.

Please add your voice to the thousands that have already signed our Petition. To increase fees & refuse to allow professionals to deliver pet education is just ridiculous! Thank you ❤

Snake safety! Be trained, be aware & be prepared! We teach the basics in our Super Puppy Courses.

Many of you are asking about snake avoidance training. I was ready to deliver classes late last year, but unfortunately Kingston Council ended our hall hire in Carrum. This was a huge loss to local puppy owners interested in training their dogs.

I have not been able to find an alternative venue locally. Education for pet dog owners is essential, particularly when delivered by professionals using current best practice techniques.

If you’d like to see our community facilities used for Family Pet Education, please sign and share the petition - link in comments. With nearly 3,000 signatures & dozens of letters of support sent to Kingston Council, I love them to cast fresh eyes on this issue. 🙏🐾❤️

Coming to Frankston January 2026 - Paw Behaviour Super Puppy Courses! 🤩 Many of our clients will be a little closer to classes!

If you’re welcoming a new baby puppy over Christmas, call me now to reserve your place in a course. Remember- your puppy can start classes at 8 weeks with a first vaccination. Please do not delay training!

Is your dog in pain? Sudden change in behaviour, or perhaps gradual small changes are often due to pain. When clients call me with a behaviour problem, some of them are surprised when I refer them to their vet for a wellness check. IMO I'd much rather the dog seek treatment first, than embark on a behaviour modification program that could be ineffective if the dog is suffering. It's also saving clients money! 😍

Many people are surprised to learn that dogs rarely show pain in the way humans do. When we’re in pain, we often rest, complain, or seek help because we understand that help is possible. Animals don’t. They have no concept of treatment, pain relief, or medical care. So instead of showing vulnerability, they do what evolution has taught them: they cope, hide it, or change their behaviour to get through it.

Showing weakness can make an animal a target. Predators and competitors notice when another animal is limping, moving slowly, or acting “off.” To stay safe, most species have evolved to mask discomfort as long as they can. Because dogs don’t understand that pain can be treated, they adjust their behaviour instead of seeking help.

They:

Move differently or avoid certain positions.
Growl, snap, or shy away from touch.
Refuse stairs or jump less often.
Become irritable, restless, or withdrawn.
Lick, chew, or fixate on one area of their body.

These changes are often subtle at first, which is why owners sometimes assume their dog is “being difficult,” “stubborn,” or “suddenly reactive,” when in fact the dog is simply coping with discomfort the only way it knows how.

Pain changes behaviour and many people may respond with punishment or increased pressure, which only adds fear and tension to the mix. Recognising pain isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most important parts of behavioural work. Many “behavioural” issues improve dramatically once pain is identified and managed.

Watch for changes in posture, movement, or mood even small ones.
Record patterns of behaviour (time of day, activity, weather, etc.).
Seek a veterinary check if your dog’s behaviour changes unexpectedly.
Avoid confrontation or punishment. A dog in pain needs compassion, not correction.

Animals don’t mask pain because they’re stoic or dramatic; they do it because they don’t know there’s another option. They can’t connect “I hurt” with “someone can help me.” So they cope, compensate, or protect themselves the only way evolution taught them to.

Vale Dr Mu'ath Abu Rumba. Such sad news. An amazing man who showed empathy for animals in devastating circumstances. ❤

We have received reports that Dr. Mu’ath Abu Rukba, 30, has been killed in Gaza.

A veterinarian who kept saving lives while his own was under constant threat, treating injured animals, feeding the hungry, and working under airstrikes and in the most impossible situation, even after losing his home.

He has embodied the very heart of this profession and what we in the animal care space stand for: compassion, and courage.

His death is not only a personal loss. It is a moral indictment of every institution that has continually chosen silence while he, and others like him, have lived their ethics to the very end.

We owe him more than sympathy. We owe him real acknowledgment, justice, and continued action, so that those who dedicate their lives to care are never left unseen again.

Woof, Woof, Woof! Puppies and growing dogs try stuff & if it works, they'll do it again. This is a nice video which will give you some tips on how to deal with that barking puppy & train behaviours to reduce or eliminate unwanted woofs! ❤

Sometimes, when dogs want something, they bark to try to get it. It can be cute, or it can be annoying, depending on your perspective. So what should you do about it? Kristi Benson and I chatted all about it in the latest episode of The Pawsitive Post in Conversation. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, watch on my Youtube channel, or read a transcript on my blog. Link in bio and below!
