Last night the nurses at Patterson River Veterinary Centre attended an anaesthesia and surgery evening at VRH (veterinary referral hospital).

It was a valuable evening where our team gained important knowledge and practical skills to further support our patients during surgical procedures.
Some of the key topics covered included capnography, ECG, and blood pressure monitoring that are all essential tools in ensuring safe and effective anaesthesia.
We’re always striving to learn, grow, and provide the highest level of care for your pets.🐾💕👌

🐣 Easter Safety Reminder for Your Pets 🐰

Easter treats can be dangerous for our furry friends and here’s what to watch out for:

🍫 Chocolate Toxicity
Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Symptoms can include:
• Vomiting & diarrhoea
• Restlessness or hyperactivity
• Tremors or seizures
The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is.

🍞 Hot Cross Buns (Raisins & Sultanas)
These can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts. Signs may include:
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite

⚠️ Foil Wrappers & Packaging
Chocolate foil, plastic wrappers, and packaging can be very tempting but dangerous. If swallowed, they can cause:
• Choking
• Gastrointestinal upset
• Bowel obstruction, which may require surgery
✅ Keep all Easter treats and wrappers well out of reach
✅ Remind kids not to share food with pets

🚨 If your pet eats chocolate, hot cross buns, or any wrappers, contact us immediately

🐾 A Day at the Clinic 🐾
We met some adorable personalities today! 💙
• Violet the red heeler came in for X-rays and her desexing procedure- rocking her signature look with her tongue out the whole time 😛 Such a brave girl!
• Lennox the Burnese mountain dog stopped by for his annual check-up and quickly decided the consult chair belonged to him… and honestly, we didn’t argue 😂👑
• Bertie the British Shorthair made himself right at home up on a shelf- clearly a fan of the high life and keeping an eye on everything from above 🐱✨
We love seeing all these unique personalities come through our doors every day! 🐶🐱

Today marks Dr Maria’s last day with us, and while we’re so excited for her next chapter in sunny Queensland with her husband Shane, it’s not easy saying goodbye.

Dr Maria has been such a special part of our team. Her kindness, dedication, and positive spirit have made a lasting impact on everyone she’s worked with, and she’s truly helped create a warm and supportive environment for both colleagues and patients.

Although we will miss her greatly, we’re so happy to see her begin this exciting new chapter. Wishing you all the happiness, relaxation, and success in your new life in Queensland, Dr Maria you deserve it all.

Thank you for everything you’ve given to the team. You will always be remembered and appreciated more than words can say.

We will all miss you dearly! 🌞🏡💛

PET OF THE MONTH
♥️🌹😻 Ernie 😻🌹♥️
Meet Ernie — our devilishly handsome tabby gentleman.

Ernie has had quite the medical adventure! With a history of urinary troubles and a surprise diagnosis of diabetes, this clever boy kept everyone on their toes. After starting insulin, he achieved remission in record time — one of the quickest turnarounds we’ve seen!
While that speedy remission was fantastic news, it did mean a brief hospital stay on an insulin infusion to carefully stabilise him. Through it all, Ernie handled everything with quiet charm and resilience.

He is now happily insulin-free and back to doing what he does best — lounging luxuriously and spending quality time with his favourite humans, especially his devoted Mumma. He’ll likely remain on a urinary diet long-term to help keep his bladder comfortable and healthy (something many of our feline friends benefit from).
We are so proud of this handsome, resilient boy — proof that with attentive owners and early intervention, amazing outcomes are possible.

Congratulations, Ernie!!
