GREYHOUNDS IN REGIONAL AUSTRALIA
Greyhounds in regional Australia are regularly taken to vets for euthanising when they don't make the grade or their racing days are over. If they are "lucky", they are dumped at the local pound. MAKING A DIFFERENCE
To

date we have endeavoured to rehome as many dogs as possible, within our limited financial and manpower capacity. Due to the very nature of our rescue locations being predominantly regional, the costs incurred for transport and temporary kennelling can be extremely limiting for us financially. As such, we rely significantly on the generosity of donations. MAKE A GIFT

Fosters Ru and Charlie are working on their best fashound lewks to attract the pawfect forever family. Come see them at Carlton Farmers Market this Saturday for style tips and snoot snugs!

As always, we will be welcoming hounds from all programs to come along and socialise. Receive free 1:1 training advice from our IAABC Behaviour Consultant, chat all things volunteering with our friendly team, meet fosters looking for their forever home, or just get your hound fix among like-minded people (and great coffee and market produce).

🧡 Foster Rosemarie’s advice is to grab your favourite snuggie and follow the humans around (while getting a nap in, of course).
🧡 Greyduate Franklin is a very good boy and thinks Sunday morning is the best time to “help” with the chores.

Marvelous Max is on the move! 🚗 He's bid farewell to his wonderful foster home out in Castlemaine to be a little closer to the city. With the love and support of new carer Grace (and the tutelage of Teddy the resident golden boy) Max can work on his confidence and bravery when out walking, having already mastered being the very best boy at home, and even picking up a bunch of tricks like "sit" and "on your bed"!

Unfortunately Max has hit the 'terrible trifecta' when it comes to attracting interested adopters, he's a big ❌ black ❌ boy ❌- and he has been waiting many months now for his pawfect people to come along and pick him!

With a face as sweet as honey and a heart of gold, we cannot believe Chloe has not had a single application! 😢

Not your average couch potato, this little ray of sunshine seeks an active home to keep her busy brain occupied - she’s a confident copilot who loves to get out and about, and would be thrilled to accompany you on adventures. And if she needs to stay behind at home, Chloe would adore a canine sibling for company and playtime.

In Australia, 19 - 25 May is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate the amazing people "behind the scenes" who keep not-for-profit organisations running, all out of the goodness of their hearts (and in our case, a snoot snuggle or two).

This year the theme is ‘Connecting Communities’ 🤝 and while we love to celebrate the amazing community of GG hounds and humans, this is a great time to also acknowledge the wider role that rescuing a dog plays in creating social interactions, combating loneliness, and improving mental health and wellbeing.

From our foster carers opening their hearts and their homes to hounds in need, to our crew of coordinators and administrators who keep the wheels turning, our crochet creatives and Etsy store superstars, IT gurus, editors and content creators, photographers, transporters, fundraisers and events crew, generous donors, and our incredibly involved board who ensure our organisation is professionally operated with a focus on financial transparency, good governance, and risk management... To every single one of you, THANK YOU!!!

For your time, skills, energy, and most of all – your love for greyhounds. Together, we make up a welcoming, inclusive, passionate community. Whether you've just joined the crew or have been here for years, our volunteers are what makes Gumtree Greys so special, and we’re just so greytful to have you all. 🆘 Greyhound rescues across the country are in crisis, we cannot keep up with the demand of dogs exiting the industry, and for months we have been faced with the difficult decision on every collection to leave dogs on our waitlist behind as we struggle to find enough foster carers for the volume of greyhounds in need.

🙏 Can you share this post to help us (and beautiful snoots like these) find foster homes in Melbourne and surrounds?

We are specifically in need of:
⭐️ WFH or hybrid working arrangement homes (for hounds who need time to adjust to being alone)
⭐️ Homes with resident social greyhounds (for hounds who need confident helpers)
⭐️ Homes with secure yards or courtyards in quiet suburbs (for hounds who are nervous walkers)
⭐️ Single level dwellings (no stairs for senior hounds)
⭐️ Homes with access to vehicles/the ability to bring dogs to markets and other weekend events for socialising and assessment

🧡 If you don’t meet the above criteria, we encourage you to put in an application and discuss your specific circumstances with our team, as we may still be able to make a match from our waitlist (please note, if you work full time hours out of the home your schedule may not be compatible with fostering).

Unfortunately we are currently unable to consider foster homes with young children, cats, or other small animals due to these greyhounds coming directly from training properties with no exposure or socialisation.
