Hunde Pet nutrition that's as unconditionally good as their love for you. HUNDE was founded by Clare Kearney in 2015. Pip is a bloody handful.

HUNDE is borne out of a belief that the food we feed our pets should be as unconditionally good as their love is for us. The intention of HUNDE is to empower people with the tools to make informed choices on behalf of their pets, so they can live long, healthy + happy lives together. The HUNDE range features thoughtfully created balancing blends to ensure that, no matter your circumstances, your pets can enjoy the enormous benefits of a homemade, fresh food diet. Clare is an Australian pet nutritionist + writer, specialising in canine and feline nutrition. Clare lives on Bundjalung Country in Northern NSW with her dogs, Tex Perkins and Pip. Tex is a kelpie who likes baths and hates electropop. Clare has studied small animal and natural nutrition at the Holistic Animal Therapy Organisation and the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies, and has spent the better part of a decade actively educating herself about nutrition and the pet food industry.

I’ve always emphasised the importance of doing the best that you can when it comes to your pet’s nutrition - and this will look different for everyone. Not everyone has the same financial resources, the same available time, the same physical or mental capacity. Not everyone wants to make the effort - and that’s ok.

I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I don’t love making my dog’s food. I LOVE feeding them deeply nutritious meals, and I even enjoy preparing it, to an extent. But meal prepping, defrosting, measuring, batching, mixing, rinsing, wiping, packaging, re-freezing, etc.? No thanks.

Despite not loving it, I’ve always managed to get it done. Until recently. You’ve seen less and less of me on here over the last few years, as I’ve become increasingly burnt out. I’ve been in recovery for about 6 months now and am slowly becoming ok with a slower pace - less expectations, less output - after a lifetime of running on adrenaline.

This process of forced slow-down has reminded me how much Hunde was created to support people with less capacity than me. I’ve been reminded of this not just because I’m reconnecting with my purpose, but because I have come to rely heavily on it myself in caring for my own dogs with limited capacity.

I was lucky to have been gardening near where Pippa was chewing on something, so I noticed when it got stuck in the roof of her mouth, between her premolars (swipe to see), because she was pawing at her face and seemed a bit distressed.

Both my dogs have had broken teeth, which may or may not have been from bones (could be from sticks or even hard treats?), and they have both gotten bones stuck across the roof of their mouths. Even still, I will continue to feed them raw meaty bones despite this demonstrated risk.

For me, it’s still worth it because I know the statistical probability (80%) that they could have developed periodontal disease by the age of 2, but Tex is almost 14 and had his first ever clean this year, and Pip is 6 with no signs of dental disease whatsoever.

I don’t just look at the documented risks, but also at the documented long term benefits. It’s a question of whether I want to remove one or two teeth over a lifetime of good dental health, or risk my dogs living a life of pain and probably losing many teeth to dental disease.

For me it’s an easy choice, but regardless of how you feel, it’s a timely reminder that feeding raw bones isn’t without genuine risks, and it’s important to weigh those risks up against the benefits when deciding what you’re comfortable with for your pet.

And then you need to make sure you consistently mitigate those risks by taking precautions, like only feeding them when you’re available to supervise. If you can’t make the necessary commitments to ensure you feed bones safely, maybe it’s best to skip them for now. Similarly, if you opt-out of raw bones, you need to invest in other approaches to dental health, which can include brushing, supplementation, natural treats or regular dentistry (or, ideally, a combination).

Cow hooves are a great option to replace bones if you’re looking for a long lasting, economical and safe choice that has been documented in academic research to support good dental health.

Do you feed raw bones? If not, how do you keep your pet’s dental health in check? 🦷

Adaptogenic mushrooms are creating some serious buzz in pet wellness, and for good reason. From a sharp mind to a shiny coat, they restore balance and support your pet’s long-term health from the inside out.

We’ve carefully selected a range of mushrooms to go into our Old Soul and Glow Up functional toppers 👇🏻

🪵 Chaga balances immune function and boosts natural antioxidants to build resilience against oxidative damage (ageing).

🦁 Lion’s Mane sharpens cognitive function and stabilises mood by stimulating nerve growth.

🪸 Maitake helps regulate blood sugar, support heart health, and neutralise free radicals. It’s also rich in beta-glucans that may have anti-cancer properties.

🍁 Reishi boosts immune function and promotes restful sleep while keeping stress levels in check.

🧽 Tremella targets chronic inflammation, fights cellular damage, and locks moisture into the skin and coat.

🦃 Turkey Tail builds immune resilience, regulates inflammation, and encourages overall metabolic balance.

I’ve never been particularly good at my elevator pitch, because for so long Hunde was an ever-evolving extension of me. As we’ve settled into our rhythm as a product-based business, I’ve not gotten any better at summarising it succinctly. But it’s been a while since I introduced myself, so here’s a little bit about me and the story of Hunde. I’m Clare and I make health foods for dogs and cats ✌🏼
