We think there is something truly magical about dogs playing together.
When dogs play, they let their guard down. They invite another dog into their space, communicate through body language, negotiate, take turns, swap roles, and learn from each other. It’s one of the most natural and rewarding forms of social interaction.
Having worked with many reactive and worried dogs over the years, I’ve noticed something remarkable. As they begin to enjoy appropriate play with other dogs, they often start to relax. The tension fades, confidence grows, and those feel-good chemicals start flowing. Play isn’t just fun – it can be incredibly therapeutic.
At Blue Mountains Pet Resort, we carefully curate our social groups. We don’t just put dogs together and hope for the best. We match personalities, play styles and confidence levels, creating opportunities for dogs to interact, play, or simply enjoy being in each other’s company. We facilitate communication, referee when needed, and step in to turn the excitement down before it becomes too much.
Today, Kayla and Benji Hill met for the very first time.
Benji Hill, our gorgeous Beagle cross, didn’t have much experience with other dogs before coming to us, but he has a naturally social temperament and loves making friends.
It wasn’t always this easy, though. In the beginning, he became overwhelmed by all the excitement and expressed it by persistently hu***ng and annoying other dogs. He needed regular “time-outs” to reset and learn that good social interactions also mean respecting when another dog says “not now.”
With guidance, experience and the right social groups, Benji has transformed into one of the best social dogs currently staying at BMPR. His play invitations are polite, he’s learned to communicate beautifully, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch his confidence grow.
It’s a great reminder that social skills can be learned when dogs are given the right environment, the right role models and the time to develop.
Watching friendships like these unfold is one of our favourite parts of what we do. ❤️🐾
