Ruben gives baths zero stars... 😾

We had to do it stages, with breaks in between.
So we could all cope (good thing Colin and I are used to cat scratches hey).

And to also give the Aloveen time to work.
I massaged it gently into every nook and cranny over his entire body (being cautious around the ears and eyes of course).

Some spots are so sensitive that I could only massage for a few seconds before he needed a break to recover 😬

But bit by bit, we lathered and rinsed until Ruben was free of most of the debris and scabs.

It probably would have taken a lot longer,
but we've been moisturising his skin
(as much as he could handle) to help everything soften and lift easier when it came time for a wash 💦

Colin carefully patted Ruben mostly dry with a towel and then a hair dryer (at a distance so as not to cause irritation to his sensitive skin).

He'll spend the night in the bathroom with the heat lamps on and a snuggle safe underneath his bed to help him keep warm.

I've been dreading this day for awhile but now that the cat bath (which was more like a gentle shower, with one of those 'handheld hose extenders') is done, I'm *very* relieved!

Ruben experienced a lot of irritation at times, especially on the 'hot spots' (despite medication to help him stay calm) but we didn't see any seizures ❤️‍🩹

And I may be imagining it, but when I put my hand on Ruben's back now, I can't feel the same degree of tension and irritation that was there before.

We've received $550 so far to help cover Ruben's previous veterinary costs 🙌
What a difference a day can make!
Huge thanks to the two supporters who have moved this goal so much closer to the finish line 🏁

We still need $295.59 to complete the
Seizure Panel blood test please 🖤

It's a comprehensive diagnostic that looks at the extracranial (outside the brain) reasons why a cat might be suffering from fits.

And there are quite a few potential causes for seizures in cats. Getting it right means getting the right treatment.

We've never had a case like this before, so of course I've been researching as much as I can 📖

Ruben has another vet appointment on Friday to check on his progress and evaluate his current medications.
So far we haven't seen any evidence of more seizures (thank goodness!) 😮‍💨

But his skin and what's left of his coat has been running brownish-red with clumps of black debris and flaking scabs when gently washed with a suitable moisturiser 😬

It's an ordeal for the lad (he wants to rip himself out of his body 😨) but he's so brave!

Here's what else we're hoping will help him...

* Cat shampoo and conditioner for very sensitive, dry and itchy skin (gentle formula with oatmeal and no irritants)
* More Fish Oil
* Vitamin E
* Vitamin C

I'll share photos in the comments and if you can please donate or purchase & post, Ruben would really benefit!

We bought him some Organic Coconut Oil to help soothe his dry, flaking skin.
And another amazing supporter has ordered Impact Colostrum for him 🤍
Heal the gut, heal the body, right?

Plus he's on a low inflammatory, species appropriate, balanced diet with Vit B12 supplementation.

Meanwhile, Ruben's getting his daily supervised walks and loves to jump up,
roll around and scratch on wooden stumps.
This activity helps to keep him calm and distracted.

Ruben... 🖤💔❤️‍🩹

One of most loving and patient cats we've ever had the pleasure to know.
And one of the most unlucky lads we've ever met too 😞

In the shade and at certain angles, it can be hard to see what's wrong with him.
Then he turns and it becomes painfully clear, as he's missing huge amounts of his fur 😬

At the end of last year, Ruben was attacked and suffered an extremely bad injury to his neck.
We took him into our care and he survived (with a lot of veterinary attention), but the stress of the ordeal didn't do him any favours 🥺 and he started to overgroom.

Despite going home to his loving family and initially improving, Ruben began again to over-groom, then to scratch at his irritated skin until it bled.
Multiple seizures followed and abnormalities were seen in his blood workup that indicated imbalances and intense inflammation 😩

After much heartbreaking consideration, it was agreed by all that the best chance of recovery required Ruben to officially become an AFF foster.

Thank you Cathie Bell for caring for Ruben when he needed assistance to feel comfortable 🙏 we're incredibly grateful you gave of your time and love so freely!

And I want to thank Colin Manning for hanging out with Ruben and taking him on supervised walks.
Environment enrichment is so important for active, outdoor loving cats!

We've spent a lot on this lad since last year. His health issues were unexpected and have been traumatic and expensive.

And we now bear the burden of his current vet and treatment costs also.
For his initial consult and diagnostics, future appointments, daily treatment and a special diet 💓

We want to turn Ruben's luck around for good. Figure out his health issues and set him up for success! ✊

Sound down ⬇️ on this one folks lol... 🙉

Thank goodness for an enclosed ute or Colin wouldn't be able to focus on the road.

But summer is coming and we need some form of climate control in the canopy.
Do you have any ideas for an affordable way to keep the space cool when the days get hot please? ♨️

We're open to any suggestions or offers of assistance!

Our previous Rescue Rangers were a different build, so we've never encountered this issue before 🤷

Today's run around for vet appointments and supplies pickup was 229kms, taking 5 and a half hours and costing $41 in fuel ⛽

Just needs a top hat and gloves.

George is in foster care in Koorda and will be journeying to the big smoke to get his vet work done soon.

We need more people willing to open hearts, homes and hankies, because a handful doing all the work doesn't cut it 🤨

It's just snot on, as Colin says lol.

There are a multitude of ways you can be involved and it's not just cats that benefit 🙌

It's communities and wildlife also.

One Welfare is about the interconnectedness of animals, people and the environment.

Lucipurrr & Vio... 💞

These darling kittens are currently recovering from their spay and neuter surgeries, with their loving family keeping a close eye on them.

Lucipurrr (the lad) had an umbilical hernia that was repaired too ❤️‍🩹

It was a big day for them.
But their mum knew that sterilisation was too important to miss!
And needed to be done before the kittens started making more kittens 😱

If you're a kitten mum or dad (or auntie, uncle, cousin, skin-sibling...) please make plans to fix your fur-family now!

A couple of Kulin lads... 🧡🌾🧡

Nyle is sitting on Roger and they're both in an old scratched up box on top of a cupboard.
It's all about location with cats lol.

Roger is still a super shy boy 🤫 but Nyle is gradually gaining confidence.
He'll jump up next to me on the kitchen bench and get all up in my business while I'm mixing meals 😆

I have to lift him down to the floor regularly just so I can get something done.
But it doesn't take him long before he reappears haha and sticks his head in a bowl.
Anyone's bowl 😂

He should be ready for a quiet and cat savvy home come summer. With at least one confident and friendly feline companion.
