⭐️ April is National Heartworm Awareness Month ⭐️

Heartworm is spread through the bite of a infected mosquito 🦟
Heartworm is a serious disease that can result in severe lung disease, heart failure or other organ damage and is potentially fatal. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis.
The good news is that we can keep our pets safe with preventative treatments, including a once-a-year injection, monthly chews or spot-ons depending on your preference. ❀️

Is your pet up to date with their heartworm prevention? Call your vet today to check if your pet is up to date.

🩺 Fun Fact Friday 🩺

Did you know? Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats due to the compounds Theobromine and Caffeine!

Chocolate contains a chemical called Theobromine. Theobromine is the predominant toxin in chocolate and is very similar to Caffeine. Theobromine and Caffeine can not be metabolised (broken down) efficiently in cats and dogs putting them in danger if they accidentally ingest chocolate. They are also a lot more sensitive to the chemical effects caused by Theobromine.

Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of Theobromine and Caffeine. These stimulants affect the cardiovascular system, respiratory systems and nervous system. Chocolate ingestion can be dangerous and even potentially fatal to your pets.

Clinical signs of chocolate poisoning:
🍫 Vomiting and Diarrhoea
🍫 Panting
🍫 Increased Thirst
🍫 Excessive Urination
🍫 Increased Heart Rate
🍫 Tremors
🍫 High Blood Pressure

If your pet gets hold of your chocolate snack please call your vet or an emergency vet immediately, keep in mind your vet will ask;
What type of chocolate it is? The cocoa % of the chocolate? The amount of chocolate eaten? The weight of your pet?

πŸ’‘Did you know March is National Pet Poison Prevention Awareness month πŸ’‘

Many common toxins are found within our house and every day to day life.

Below are some things to keep in mind to keep your pets safe and healthy !
* Ensure medications are in a secure safe place.
* Ensure you know what plants are in your garden or in your home.
* Ensure you know what the food you are giving your pets contains.
* Ensure left overs aren’t left out on tables accessible to your furry friends.
* Keeping bins in a secure place your pet can’t get into them.
* Educate guests so they don’t potentially feed toxic foods to your pets.
* Keep fertilisers and chemicals locked away in a safe secure place.
* When using chemicals or fertilisers read the safety label to see if it’s safe to use with pets around.
*Care with compost and making sure your pets won’t eat it.
*Research what plants are toxic to your pets that you may have in your house or garden.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic or harmful to them call your vet.
