$3 MILLION BIG DANCE (LISTED) – 1600 METRES, TUESDAY 3 NOVEMBER

Bianco Vilano is fit and ready for the Big Dance at Randwick on Tuesday. I have been happy with his preparation. He has had three barrier trials and one race in preparation for the Big Dance.

I was happy with his first-up start in the Listed Weekend Hustler over 1400 metres at Caulfield on 10 October. He finished seventh of 14, beaten 3.27 lengths. I was pleased with the way he held his ground going to the post. He subsequently won a barrier trial at Albury over an unsuitable 900 metres. It was a good hit-out and topped off his fitness for Tuesday’s race. He has drawn barrier 12 but may come into 10 if the emergencies do not get a start. It is an okay barrier from 10 in the 20-horse field. Tyler Schiller has been engaged to ride. The track is currently rated a Good 4, with showers forecast through to Tuesday, so hopefully the track comes up somewhere between a Good 4 and Soft 6. He has won on a heavy track but is better suited on a good track. It is not an easy race, as the whole field has won or run second in a NSW country cup in the past year. However, his Albury and Wagga Cup wins should hold him in good stead, albeit at the shorter distance of 1600 metres.

VALE RAY PALMER
Long-term client and friend Ray Palmer passed away on 15 September 2026 at Calvary Nursing Home, Albury, aged 85. Ray lived his life and farmed at Bijiji, Corowa, and after selling the property retired to Albury. My involvement with Ray started in the early 1980s when I trained Lang’s Crossing, whom Ray raced in partnership with his friends and Hay identities, Mr and Mrs Gordon McMaster. Lang’s Crossing was a handy Riverina galloper, winning six races including the 1987 Gundagai Cup.
In recent times, Ray had success as a part-owner of stable star Sparring. An animal lover, Ray often called into the stables to see the horses and have a chat. Ray will be sadly missed.

QATAR PRIX DE L’ARC DE TRIOMPHE – 2400 METRES (THE ARC)
EUROPE’S RICHEST FLAT RACE AT 5 MILLION EUROS ($7.9 MILLION AUSTRALIAN)

Overview and pedigree information provided by my brother Peter, who attended the Arc in October.
Daryz stamped himself as a modern-day champion, winning the Arc for the second consecutive year, displaying an incredible turn of foot at the end of 2400 metres. A brown stallion standing at almost 16.2 hands, with good conformation but a bit plain to look at, he is similar in appearance to his bay champion sire Sea The Stars. Both have no white markings.

A pedigree to die for – Daryz is by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross), winner of the 2009 Arc. The dam of Sea The Stars, Urban Sea (Miswaki), also won the Arc in 1993. Incredibly, she is also the dam of Galileo, the Epsom and Irish Derby winner and 11-time champion sire in Great Britain and Ireland. Galileo sired over 100 Group 1 winners and is the sire of champion stallion Frankel, among many other great horses.

Daryz’s dam, Daryakana (Selkirk), as a three-year-old won the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase and the Group 2 Prix Tourelles in France, both at 2400 metres, and was undefeated in five starts at three. By comparison with Australian predominant breeding practices of speed on speed, Daryz’s sire, dam and grandam all won Group 1 races at the highest level over 2400 metres.

Daryz was bred and is owned by the Aga Khan Studs and was immediately retired to stud after the Arc. The Aga Khan Studs also own and stand Sea The Stars at their stud in Ireland for a 300,000-euro service fee ($475,035 Australian). In 2026 he served 138 mares. Applying the fee to all services, including their own mares, that equates to $72 million Australian dollars.

Attendance at the Arc was 35,000, a tad low I thought, but overall the crowd appeared to be genuine racing enthusiasts. The Longchamp racing surface is excellent: a big, wide, spacious track. Grandstand facilities are not at the standard of the new facilities at Randwick or Flemington, but it was a very well-run race meeting and a good day at the races.

STABLE OPERATIONS – A NEW DIRECTION

A few months ago, I made the decision to consolidate our stable operations at my home stables and, at the same time, reduce the number of horses we have in training. That transition is now complete, and we are operating solely from the home stables.

Going forward, we plan to maintain around 10 horses in work, while continuing to utilise Wadari Stables for pre-training. This arrangement will allow us to maintain a regular flow of horses coming through while keeping our numbers at a level that enables us to give every horse the individual attention it deserves.

There were a number of factors behind the decision. To consistently maintain 20 to 25 horses in full work, we really needed around 40 horses on the books at various stages of preparation. As we have not been particularly active in the yearling sales market, maintaining those numbers has become increasingly difficult and, more importantly, so has maintaining the quality of horse we want in the stable.

Like many racing stables, finding and retaining good, experienced staff is an ongoing challenge, while the costs associated with virtually every aspect of training a racehorse continue to increase. Rather than simply chasing numbers, we believe operating with around 10 horses in work will allow us to concentrate on what has always been most important – getting the best possible result from every horse entrusted to us.

Our home stables are modern, safe and airy and include a horse walker, treadmill and green pick areas, providing a quiet and healthy environment for the horses. With a smaller team, we can devote even greater attention to each individual horse and concentrate on those all-important “one-percenters” that can make the difference between running well and winning.

We have enjoyed some wonderful success over the past few years, and this change is very much about giving ourselves the best opportunity to continue that success. We want to maintain a stable where quality, attention to detail and results remain the priorities.

Of course, the success of the new arrangement will depend greatly on the continued support of our owners. Your loyalty and support have been an important part of the stable’s achievements, and they are very much appreciated.

Hopefully, by continuing to work together in partnership, we can build on what we have achieved and look forward to many more enjoyable days and plenty more winners in the years ahead.

BIG DANCE – DRESS REHEARSAL
Bianco Vilano is well advanced in his preparation for the $3 million Big Dance over 1600m at Randwick on Tuesday, 3 November.

To be eligible, horses must have won or finished second in selected NSW Country Cups, with benchmark ratings then applied to determine inclusion in the field. Off the back of his Albury and Wagga Cup wins this year, Bianco Vilano has a benchmark rating of 103, which should ensure his inclusion in the field.

In preparation for the race, Bianco Vilano had two barrier trials at Wagga on 16 and 28 September and, in both, he did exactly what we asked of him. He was particularly impressive in his latest trial, with jockey Josh Richards commenting that he felt fantastic and that he believed the horse would have “exploded” had he let him go.

We are currently considering races on 9, 10 and 17 October as a lead-up to the Big Dance.

Run The Numbers – What Has Become of the American Shuttle Stallion?

In an article in the online publication The Straight on 1 September, Bren O’Brien addresses the decline in American shuttle stallions. An abridged version of the article follows:

After a major decline in trans-Pacific shuttling of stallions, there are no stallions standing in Australia in 2026 that have shuttled directly from the United States. Fifteen years ago, 23 made the annual trip. Run The Numbers looks at how this trend has evolved.

In the past few years, only a trickle of American stallion blood has been imported into Australia: one in 2023, none in 2024 and three in 2025.
Appetites and trends changed and, arguably, the outcross blood became more prevalent via the mares’ side, with a string of stars by Australian stallions out of American mares. From the peak of 61 shuttle stallions, just 15 made the trip here in 2025. Between them, they served less than a third of the 2003 peak.

RUNNERS FOR OCTOBER
October is shaping as a light month in terms of starters, with only Bianco Vilano and Lull Us Away likely to face the starter.

A number of horses are expected to barrier trial during the month before commencing their next campaigns, while some of our younger horses will be preparing to begin their racing careers.

ELLA BENT – STABLE APPRENTICE
Ella had a relatively quiet month, recording one win aboard Lord of Valor at Corowa on 14 September.
Hopefully, through the spring and summer, when there are more race meetings in the area, there will be increased opportunities for Ella to add to her winning tally.

Importantly, he had no issues getting through his normal trackwork; the hoof problem became apparent when the intensity of race-day gallops increased.

For that reason, his suitability for a new discipline should be assessed carefully, but I genuinely believe there is a lot of horse here for someone prepared to put the time into him.

He is forward and sprightly, so he is not a beginner's horse. He needs an experienced, confident rider who understands thoroughbreds and can help him channel his energy.
