🦴 Lemur Case of the Week

A young lemur was presented with lethargy and difficulty bearing weight on one of its forelimbs. The owner mentioned that its diet consisted mainly of mangoes.

Orthopedic examination revealed no fractures or obvious skeletal injuries. However, blood work showed low calcium levels, raising suspicion of Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) caused by nutritional imbalance.

After initiating calcium supplementation and correcting the diet, the lemur’s condition improved significantly, with increased activity and normal use of the affected limb.

✅ Lesson learned: Even foods that seem healthy, such as fruits, cannot provide all the nutrients exotic animals need. A balanced, species-appropriate diet is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies and metabolic diseases.
