SENSITIVE CONTENT WARNING: The following images depict wounds on donkeys and may be upsetting to certain viewers.

The recent donkey clinics conducted by the VAWZ/WHW Donkey Health and Welfare Centre in the Beitbridge District revealed a large number of donkeys at market locations that were suffering from painful harness wounds.

Donkeys play an important role in local communities, providing a source of draught power for agriculture, as well as a means of transport to take goods to markets. However, this often comes at a cost to the donkeys as heavy work and ill-fitting harnesses can cause wounds that compromise their health and welfare.

Our team, in partnership with World Horse Welfare, provides critical treatment, replaces harmful harnesses, and empowers farmers with training on proper harnessing techniques to prevent future wounds. We also educate local farmers on the importance of good welfare for their donkeys. Thus, our goal is to work together with local communities to make donkey health and welfare a priority, and ensure these hardy workers receive the care they deserve!

The generosity and enthusiasm from everyone involved and all who attended, have made a huge difference and we are beyond grateful for all your contributions. Together, we are making a positive impact and supporting a cause that truly matters. πŸ’–

A huge thank you to Profeeds for putting together this fantastic video that gives insights into the important work conducted by the VAWZ Rural Animal Welfare Clinic!

VAWZ works tirelessly to better the lives of both animals and people in rural areas via the provision of services such as free rabies vaccinations and sterilizations for dogs and cats in communities where these services are not readily available.

Why is our work so important?

Vaccinations against rabies help to protect not only animals, but also people from contracting this deadly virus, as dog bites are the primary cause of rabies in humans in rural areas, with over 40% of human deaths from rabies being children. Rabies is 99% fatal and all animals suspected of having this virus are euthanized. Thus, these vaccines help to save both human and animal lives.

Sterilizations (spays/neuters) of rural dogs and cats help to control populations of these animals in rural areas, as well as to improve their health and welfare. VAWZ aims to improve the welfare of rural animals by getting to the root of the problem of uncontrolled breeding and preventing ripple effects such as the spread of disease, poor health and welfare, high numbers of strays and animals which are not cared for, and increased burdens on shelters due to an ever burgeoning stray population.

VAWZ relies entirely on public support to fund our work, and we extend our sincerest thanks to Profeeds for their continued support!
