HOW TO CHOOSE QUALITY BREEDING STOCK FOR A SUCCESSFUL RABBIT FARM
/ kuzvisarudzira mhando yetsuro dzakanaka

As a professional rabbit farmer, your farm can never be better than your breeding stock. Starting with strong, healthy breeders determines growth rate, litter size, and long-term profit.

■ SELECT ACTIVE AND ALERT RABBITS
Healthy breeders are energetic with bright eyes and smooth fur.

■ CHECK BODY CONFORMATION
Good breeders have strong legs, broad chest, and well-shaped bodies.

■ AVOID RABBITS WITH DEFECTS
Do not select rabbits with crooked legs, poor teeth, or deformities.

■ CONFIRM AGE AND WEIGHT
Breeders should be mature but not old, with proper body weight for the breed.

■ CHECK BREED HISTORY IF POSSIBLE
Rabbits from productive parents perform better.

■ OBSERVE TEMPERAMENT
Calm rabbits breed better and are easier to manage.

■ INSPECT GE***AL AREA CAREFULLY
Ensure there are no infections or abnormalities.

■ AVOID SICK OR WEAK RABBITS
Even cheap rabbits can cost you more in losses later.

■ BUY FROM TRUSTED BREEDERS
Reliable sources reduce disease risk.

■ QUARANTINE NEW RABBITS
Isolate new stock for observation before mixing with others.

Quality breeders are the foundation of long-term rabbit farming success.

*Physical Description - Flemish Giant*

There may be no more awe-inspiring rabbit in the world than the Flemish Giant. If one came hopping along, you might at first glance mistake it for a dog. These rabbits weigh 6.8kgs on average and can reach a length of 76.2 centimeters Males have broader heads than females. Females have a dewlap – a large fold of skin under the chin that they use to warm their young. A well-regarded Flemish Giant, according to breed standards, has a large and nicely shaped head, erect ears, a long and powerful body, an evenly colored coat, and a nicely rounded rump. Flemish Giants have thick, glossy fur that comes in a variety of colors. Seven colors are officially recognized in the United States by the National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders. These are black, blue, fawn, light gray, steel gray, sandy, and white.

*Origins*

Flemish Giants are a very old breed of domesticated rabbit. Originally raised for meat and fur, the breed already existed in Belgium by the 16th century. The first standards for the breed were written in 1893.

Although a domesticated breed, Flemish Giants still retain certain adaptations of wild rabbits. They have large ears that contribute to excellent hearing, and good eyesight, both of which would help them detect predators.

a) Selecting rabbit breed

As in any breeding operation, it is necessary that one should always breed from good stock. Select the rabbit breed that suits the purpose of your production. The producer must decide at the start of the business as for what use or market he/she is raising rabbits. The focus of this paper is on rabbits raised for meat. In general, small breeds mature earlier than large ones. Small breeds (Polish) can usually be bred at 4 months; medium weight rabbits (New Zealand Whites and Californians etc.) at 6 to 7 months; and the giants (Flemish giant) at 9 to 12 months. However, many commercial breeders begin breeding successfully at 5 months of age. Although large breeds are sometimes used for meat, they have a FCR that is less profitable than medium breeds. At maturity most giant breeds weigh 6.4 to 7.3 kg and small breeds 1.4 to 1.8 kg. Small breeds are used primarily for pets, shows and hobbyists, whereas the medium breeds that are considered dual purpose are most commonly used for meat and research laboratories. New Zealand White and Californian, which are the most popular medium breeds, reach a weight of 1.4 to 2.3 kg in 8 weeks of age or less. It is important to use the right animals within the breed for foundation stock. In establishing a rabbit enterprise, it is advisable to purchase animals with records. Factors to consider when purchasing foundation stock include:

*Type Vitality
* Breeding efficiency
* Milk production
* Rapid growth
* Longevity
* Disease resistance
* Feed conversion
* Mortality

The doe should always be taken to the buck’s hutch for breeding. If the doe fails to mate within a few minutes, she should be removed and returned later.

How To Apply Rabbit Urine As Fertilizer

Here comes the subject of discussion. Like other fertilizers; there are some processes and precautions you must take when you want to apply rabbit urine as fertilizer.
Firstly, you need to either get the urine, directly from your rabbit farm or purchase from rabbit farmers. A mature rabbit can produce up to 250ml of urine per day; five (5) mature rabbits can produce up to one (1) liter of urine per day.
Do not apply the rabbit urine directly on the crops, it is highly concentrated and can scorch your crop; you need to dilute with water for safe use. Rabbit urine is best used as fertilizer by mixing it with water at a ratio of 1:5; that is, one (1) liter of the urine to five (5) liters of water.
There are different methods of fertilizer application, depending on the type and nature of the fertilizer you want to apply. Because rabbit urine fertilizer is in liquid form, it is best applied using fertigation or foliar application.
Fertigation is a method of applying liquid fertilizer through irrigation water; you mix the urine in the irrigation water at the recommended rate as stated earlier. Foliar application is another method of applying fertilizers in liquid form through the leaves and stem of the plant.
In fertigation, the rabbit urine is diluted with the irrigation water and it is applied to the root zone using drip tubes or other means. Alternatively, the foliar application applies the fertilizer to the leaves, stems, at times, root region.
The advantages of fertigation are; it is easy to achieve, less time consuming and application is done to the roots directly where the plants utilize it. The advantage of the foliar application is; it allows the plants to have easy access to the fertilizer, thereby, enhancing the perfect utilization of the fertilizer. Plants absorb the fertilizers through parts like lenticels, stomata aside from the roots. Although, it could be stressful and time-consuming.

Advantages of Rabbit Production

1. Minimal space requirements: Up to 12 rabbits (weaners) can be raised in a square metre,

2. Less time demanding: Rabbits can be fed once a day, under proper management.

3.Prolificacy: Rabbits have a very short gestation period (average 30days) and can rebreed within 14 days after kindling. A doe can produce at least 50 kits in a year,

4.Products and Income. Up to 98% of the rabbit can benefit the farmer. Rabbit products include meat, breeding stock, rabbit urine processed into foliar fertilizer, rabbit manure, pelts into leather (shoes, wallets, phone pouches, jackets and belts), furs to make coats, claws to make buttons and offal into pet food. 5.Lucrative and sustainable business: Rabbits are sold at 12-16 weeks with production costs not exceeding 2.00 per kg and the current RBPAZ buying price is 5.00 per kg. Breeding schedule can be adjusted to sell rabbits monthly. The breeding stock can produce for up to three years

Rabbits can overheat very quickly, particularly those kept in wooden hutches and sheds outdoors which can heat up extremely rapidly
Sadly, heatstroke is fatal in most cases, so it’s essential that rabbit owners take the necessary steps to prevent this
Steps include moving hutches into the shade and providing cooling ice blocks and fans to regulate temperatures
Signs of heatstroke include lethargy, panting, reddening of the ears and convulsions
If you suspect that your rabbit has heatstroke you must seek veterinary help immediately
Top 10 tips to keep rabbits cool in summer
1. Move your rabbits' hutch out of the sun into a cooler place (this may even be inside)
2. A fan can be used to keep the air cool and create airflow, however, do not blow the fan directly onto the rabbits and ensure they have enough room to move away if they wish. Cover any wires with rabbit-proof covering to avoid your pet chewing on dangerous electrics. A cold, rung out towel can be placed over the run to provide shade and the fan can be blown onto this to help lower the temperature. Be careful to not cover the whole hutch as the rabbits will still need airflow to keep cool and ensure that the towel isn't dripping wet to avoid drenching your rabbits.
3. Rabbits are not good swimmers so please don’t encourage them to jump in a pool as the shock could even prove fatal. Instead, try freezing a large bottle of water or ice packs and wrapping them in an old, clean tea towel and place in the hutch. That way, if your rabbits feel hot, they can lie next to the bottle to keep cool.
4. Consider purchasing a special self-cooling mat which can be placed on the floor of the hutch or run to lower temperatures and provide respite from the heat
5. Marble tiles or slates are brilliant to introduce into a run and keep it cool so your rabbits can lie on it if needed. Be careful to ensure the tiles remain in the shade, though, as the tiles can become extremely hot if placed in direct sunlight.

Most farmers are turning to overfeed their rabbits and inturn bloat wipes all weaners thereby no production realised. Let's stick to manufacturers guide on amount of gramms per rabbit according to age. Weaners in one cage, do mathematics and put the right quantity of all. If you want to feed twice per day put first half of recommended feed during the day and the other half in the evening. Don't put too much hay as hay is fibre and food also. Put reasonably. On your next meal the troughs should be empty and before you feed check physically the tummies of the rabbits, ( by sampling 2 or 3) if they are to full or food left starve them even for a day or as is necessary. Select weaners growing fast and isolate them as these are the mostly hit as they get the first share coz of their stamina. In adult rabbits do the same. Single cages are also a problem do the same, loosing a rabbit to bloat is double punishment, food costs and no production. Happy farming . Preventing direct sunlight, using wet mats inside for them to rest on or wet rags or jute bags on the roof during midday or when very hot
