BEAN RUST ALERT!

Bean Rust is a fungal disease that compromises the health of bean leaves, stems, and pods, manifesting as reddish-brown spots or pustules, which can lead to defoliation and reduced yields. Key symptoms include small, white, raised spots on leaves, round, reddish-brown spots on leaves, reddish-brown dust-like spores, yellow rings around specific bean varieties, leaf abscission, darkening spots in late season, pustules of red-brown powdery spores on leaves and pods, and severely infected leaves turning chlorotic, dry, and declining. The fungus Uromyces appendiculatus is the causal agent, with the disease being favored by moderate temperatures, humidity, and cool, cloudy weather

Maize streak virus by Liberty Madzinga Chapwanya +263712011012

Causes and Transmission
- the disease is caused by Gemivirus
- the disease is transmitted by leaf hopers (_Cicadulina spp_)e.g _C.mbila_
- it is commonly found in late planted crops and other susceptible varieties

Signs and Symptoms
- small ,pale ,circular spots appear on the young leaves
- Yellow streaks appear along the leaf veins
- lessions can be yellow, white or red
- affected crops produce small and misshapenned cobs
- yield reduced by producing undesired crops

Prevention and Control
- avoid planting maize near previously affected land
- Use cabametes to reduce spread of the disease like FD Carwin
- plant insect resistant varieties
- Early planting can reduce the impact of disease
- spray fast acting insecticides such as pyrethrons
- use systemic Pesticides such as Acephate,Fd imidacloprid ,FD Malathion 50EC*
- Also spray fungicides to reduce disease build up
