*Quick Facts*
➢ Purple Blotch in onion is a major threat to the onion and it is caused by the fungus Alternaria porri.
➢ It survives on infected crop debris or near the soil surface.
➢ It resumes its cycle with the production of spores as warm, wet conditions occur.
➢ Garlic, shallots and leeks may also be affected.

*Favorable Conditions and Spread*
➢ The disease favors warm moist conditions, which prevail in prolonged rains or leaf wetness.
➢ Wind, irrigation water or splashing rain disperse the spores to healthy plants and fields.

*Symptoms*
➢ Symptoms first appear on older leaves or seed stalks as small water-soaked lesions that quickly develop white
centers.
➢ As the lesions progress, they enlarge and turn brown to purple with yellow concentric rings on the margins.
➢ Under favourable condition, the plants wilt, loose erectness and destruction occur within 10 days.

*Control Measures*
➢ Healthy seeds should be used and practice crop rotation.
➢ Seed should be treated with Thiram or Apron star @ 4 g per kg of seeds and 10g per 4kg of seeds respectively.
➢ Apply preventive fungicides like FD Mancozeb, FD Copper oxychloride and FD Chlorothalonil.
➢ On heavy infestations use curative fungicides like Fivestar, Tebuconazole, Folicur and Propineb
