Dog sterilization is a noble idea, that every pet owner should think about. Failure to do that have dire consequences. We recently had a case of dystocia (difficult whelping) at our surgery. The bitch tried to give birth but it was unsuccessful due to a fetus that was poorly positioned in the birth canal. To make matters worse, the bitch was more than 100kms away from the vet and in the remote part of the country. It was presented to Vet Hub Veterinary Surgery three day later. The dog was stressed, dehydrated, lethargic and in pain. It was an emergency case. We put the dog on fluid therapy and proceeded to manage the case surgically. All the eight fetus in the uterus were dead and autolysed. The uterus wall was fragile and filled with foul smelling greenish/brownish fluid, such that we had to remove the whole uterus in order to save the bitch from septicaemia. The dog was hospitalised for close monitoring and administration of meds. The good news is that our patient survived and re-united with its owner.
