Whenever thinking of poultry farming, Seven things you must need to know:

1. Market research

It is very important to critically look at the demand that needs to be met. Is there high demand for table eggs, out grower chicken or broiler meat? Most start-up farmers go by what a friend or relative or neighbouring farmer is doing and hope to reap the benefits.

It is important that you take your time to talk to clients or potential customers and listen to them. Do a survey on restaurants, hotels, open air or takeaway eateries, supermarkets and delis and collect as much data as possible.

Ask questions about seasonal trends of products that you intend to bring into the market. Sometimes your assumptions may not match your survey results or outcome, so be ready to change your original plans and make new decisions.

2. Farm location

A poultry farm can be located on any dry land anywhere in the country as it is not dependent on any weather patterns. However, the ideal location would be outskirts of urban or peri-urban cities where there is ready market for both meat and eggs. Construct your farm where there is access to all weather road, away from riparian land that experience occasional flooding and landslide.

3. Housing system

The most common housing system in this country is deep litter, where the entire floor is covered by wood shaving and the other equipment like nest boxes, feeders and drinkers are centrally located. It is best suited for all types of birds and conforms to animal welfare requirement.

The free-range type is common for Sasso chicken with a bit of housing at night and scavenging in an open enclosure. In organic farming, the chickens are most of the time on free range scavenging and are on restricted commercial feed with no use of antibiotics and any additive.

4. Demand for building

The most ideal house in this region must be open sided rectangular shaped structure, with roof made of iron sheet or locally available waterproof material. The long side of the house must be on an East-west orientation to reduce direct sunlight on the chicks.

Side walls should be 2-3 feet high made of bricks, iron sheet or block and the rest covered by wire mesh and chicken netting at 6-7 feet high. The floor could be concreted or compacted with red soil.

5. Choice of breed and supplier

If you want to keep commercial layers, choose type of breed which is hardy with low mortality rate, fast growth rates, high peak production, long peak period and good persistence (like Bovans brown). If it is for both meat and egg production, look for a breed of high feed conversion efficiency, and of good tasty and tender quality meat (like dual purpose Sasso).

6. Optimal health protection

Threats to your flock will include but not limited to protozoal and parasitic diseases, bacteria, yeast and mold and viral infections. You will need good rearing conditions that include proper brooding, temperature control, ventilation and humidity as well as quality water and adequate feed supply all the time.

Biosecurity is pivotal to your success; the premises must be highly sanitised within and around the site with limited flock visits to only authorised personnel. Vaccination schedule must be followed to the letter and must be chosen based on efficacy and administered professionally.

7. Record keeping

Anything that cannot be counted cannot be measured. Most farmers ignore the value of good record keeping. Feed being the highest production cost in poultry production, means that it must be weighed to the level of grammes fed/bird/day, and weight sampling must be done on weekly basis to establish production efficiency.

*10 COMMON MISTAKES DURING BROODING YOU NEED TO AVOID*

Brooding is the supply of heat to chicks starting from their first day to about 2-3 weeks of age. There are some mistake you need to avoid when brooding your chicks, these are:

🤒1 .
OVERCROWDING

Overcrowding Chicks during brooding can cause the following:
🐥 Reduction in growth rate.
🐥 High mortality.
🐥 Increase in spread of infectious diseases.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Provide a space of at least 50 chicks/m² starting from day one and gradually increase the space as they grow.

🤒2. SMALL FEEDING SPACE

This can result in large variation in the weight or growth of the chicks (that is some will be growing very fast while some are so stunted).

RECOMMENDATIONS

Provide enough feeding space so that at least about 75% to 80% of the chicks can have access to feed at the same time.

🤒 3. SMALL DRINKING SPACE/ RESTRICTED DRINKING HABIT

Water is very important for digestion and absorption of nutrients. Small drinking space and restricting your bird(s) water intake will effect in:
🐥 indigestion of feed.
🐥 poor growth of chicks.
🐥 mortality of the chicks.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Just as for feeding space, provide enough drinking space (drinkers) for the chicks. never limit water supply in a brooder

🤒4. LOW LIGHTING OF THE BROODING HOUSE

During the brooding stages, your chicks are to be given access to water and feed ad-libbed (at any given time). So provision on sufficient lighting apparatus will make the bird adapt quickly to their waterer and feeder. Avoid spot lighting.

RECOMMENDATION
Provide enough light at the feed level for the chicks, so that they can feed well. Only start reducing lights when birds are 8 weeks of age.

🤒 5. TEMPERATURE

Regulating your brooder house temperature will have the biggest advantage to your farm. Getting your brooder:

🖌️ TOO HOT will result in:
🐥 Dehydration of the chicks.
🐥 Low feed consumption.
🐥 Heat stress.
🐥 Death of the chicks.

🖌️ Lower Temperature at the brooding stage will result in:
🐥 Cold.
🐥 Underfeeding and other sickness related to cold.
🐣 Stampede due to clustering of bird to generate warmth.

RECOMMENDATION
Provide a temperature of 35 ⁰C to the chicks starting from day one and reduce this every week.

🤒 7. LOW VENTILATION

Although heat is considered first before ventilation when it comes to brooding. However there should be a way of ventilating the house without compromising the temperature in the brooding house.
Low ventilation causes the following:
🐥 High humidity.
🐣 Build up of gases e.g. ammonium in the brooding house which can cause stress and respiratory diseases.

RECOMMENDATION
Build your brooder to allow ventilation without compromising the heat in the house.

🤒 8. USE OF WRONG LITTER MATERIALS

Using saw dust that the chicks can feed on can be dangerous to their health. It can also cause Aspergillosis when they inhaled the dust.

RECOMMENDATION
Use wood shavings rather than saw dust. If saw dust is to be use, cover it with old newspapers or sacks that is properly washed and disinfected.

🤒 9. POOR HYGIENE

Not changing the litter at the right time can cause diseases.

RECOMMENDATIONS
🐣 Change the litter material regularly at most, every 3 days
🐣 Don't allow water to be spilling on the litters
🐣 Chemicals like kerosene kills chicken so much so, in no way should they come in contact with the chicks.

🤒 10. POOR PROTECTION FROM RODENTS

Rodents like rat are great enemy of chicks. They can feed on your chicks and cause much damage.

RECOMMENDATION
Use rat poison and traps around the brooding house to get rid of the rats.

:

Sasso chicken are semi local chickens originating from France. These are dual purpose chicken for meat and eggs prodution. These chicken have flexible feeding regime. Their rearing pattern is also flexible. Sasso can be raised under intensive like broilers and be given broilers feed. They can also be raised for layers by giving them layers feed. They can also be raised under semi intensive like mikolongwe and be given mikolongwe feed and they can be raised on free range at your backyard like local chicken. Because of this flexibility it is very easy and affordable to raise Sasso chicken.

: When raised like broilers you can slaughter the chicken in 10 weeks and they would have achieved above 2.6 kgs in weight. When you raise them under semi intensive it takes 3 months to slaughter them for meat.

: Sasso start laying eggs from 20 weeks . You need to start feeding them layers marsh at this point. Sasso can lay an average of 200 to 240 eggs per year . They dont brood their eggs . You either need to give their eggs to local chickens for hatching or put the fertilized eggs in an incubator. Note that for an egg to be fertlized you need a c**k . Ratio is around 1 c**k to 7 to 10 hens.

: At full growth Sasso can weigh up to around 6 kgs for c**ks while hens can weigh aroound 3.8 kgs. Full growth is achieved around 6 to 7 months .

; Sasso chicken are multi coloured like local chicken . They come in different colours like brownish , black ,greyish , whitish and some have bare or naked necks just like some local chickens.

: You can choose any feeding regime depending on how you wish to raise them .ie broilers feed or layers feed .

Day old to 6 weeks - broiler starter
7 to 8 weeks - broiler grower
9 to 10 weeks - broiler finisher

Day old to 6 weeks - chick mash
7 weeks to 19 weeks - growers mash
20 weeks and above - layers mash

Day old to 6 weeks - chick mash
7 weeks to 8 weeks - growers mash
9 weeks to 19 weeks - Deya mixed with a little growers mash , chicken remains and self grazing.
20 weeks - Deya mixed with a little layers mash for a good egg production, kicthen remains and self grazing.

: You may opt to keep sasso chickens under intensive ( full time indoors ) or semi intensive ( erect a fence outside the khola where chickens should be let out to play and feed during the day and kept inside the khola at night) or free range ( just let the chickens graze anywhere during the day and let them into the khola at night only).
Note : Sasso should only be released under free range after 8 weeks intensive or semi intensive for optimimum

An ideal khola for 500 layers or 1000 broilers should be 8 meters long and 6 meters wide. This is for fully grown up birds.

Use super gro and care as supplement to boost the growth, immunity system, reduce mortality rate and disease, and so they can start laying faster with quality eggs.
