1. Tank Size
Space Availability: Choose a tank size that fits comfortably in your space.
Horizontal Layout: Most fish thrive in a horizontally oriented tank, as it provides more swimming room.
2. Fish Type
Species Selection: Decide on the type of fish you'd like, considering their lifespan, adult size, and compatibility with others.
Tropical Fish: If you opt for tropical species, an aquarium heater will likely be necessary to maintain a stable water temperature.
3. Essential Equipment
Filter: Select a filter appropriate for your tank size and fish population. Sponge filters are excellent options for beginners.
Lighting: Install artificial lighting to maintain a steady light cycle. Most fish need 8–10 hours of light daily.
Water Test Kit: Test the water regularly for pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels to maintain a healthy environment.
Water Conditioner: Use a conditioner to remove chlorine from tap water before adding it to the tank. Always use a conditioner during routine water changes.
