Babesiosis is a serious tick-borne disease that can affect dogs and, if left untreated, can become life-threatening.
The disease is caused by Babesia parasites that infect and destroy red blood cells, potentially leading to severe anaemia and other complications.
Common warning signs include:
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Pale or yellowish gums
• Dark or reddish urine
• Rapid breathing
• Weakness or collapse
⏳ Symptoms may not appear immediately. In some cases, signs of babesiosis can only become noticeable several days after a dog has been bitten by an infected tick. This means that even if you can't find any ticks on your dog now, the symptoms could still be an indication of a previous tick bite and possible babesiosis.
If your dog is showing any of these signs—especially if they have recently been exposed to ticks—don't wait. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for the best possible outcome.
