Deworming ⚠️

Birds should be dewormed every 3 to 6 months. Some people assume that if their birds live inside and are hardly exposed to the outside environment like wild birds, they have a low chance of getting parasites. That is however not the case; they can get infected by contaminated food, f***s from other birds, dirty water etc. Remember that any bird can get infected, no matter how clean their living situation is.

It is Important not to break the deworming cycle. They can get really sick, and it can even be fatal. Your bird can quickly give worms to other birds or even humans. So do the right thing and deworm your bird, to ensure not just the safety of your own bird, but for other birds too!

Types of worms:
• Ascars (roundworms)
• Capillaria (hairworms)
• Cestodas (tapeworms)
• Acuarias (gizzard worms)

Where a bird can pick up worms:
• Contaminated food
• Water; make sure to change their drinking water regularly
• F***s; if one bird is infected, it can be passed on to to other birds, especially when they share cages and their f***s gets onto toys, into food etc.
• Wild birds; some wild birds can carry worms for their entire life span. It’s safer to keep your birds away from wild birds.

Symptoms of worms in birds:
• Diarrhoea
• Vomiting
• Irregular bowel movements
• Intestinal blockage
• Weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Heavy mucus on droppings

This is so sad. Please adopt a dog or cat this Christmas from Vaalpets or any other rescue shelter. Their adoption fees are very reasonable. You will receive a healthy, neutered pet with all vaccines up to date. You will be giving hope and joy to an animal that needs it more than you know.

‼️ Vaalpets is full to capacity and we will not take in any more animals. ‼️

We also will not take in strays to keep safe, while searching for owner, as we don’t have any open camps!
