Monkey Matters Eastern Cape Monkey Matters Primate Rescue Centre - Education & Rehabilitation
We care for orphaned or injured Ver

Monkey Matters is an organization dedicated to helping the public resolve issues regarding conflicts between human and non-human primates. We will rescue any injured, orphaned or displaced SA primate. Those that are healthy, but cannot be released back to where they were found, will be sent to Riverside Wildlife, in Limpopo for rehabilitation. There are no reputable rehabilitation centers in the Eastern Cape for rehabilitation and troop-forming.

Norman 🩵
We received a frantic call about this boy on a "lead" being thrown around, and when approached, they shoved him in a suitcase 😔😡
Thanks to the assistance of the police, we managed to get him here safely 🙏
The tie downs around his waist had eaten into his flesh to the bone and was so painful for him. Very scared and sore boy 😔
After a few weeks of treatment, good food, and lots of attention, he is doing so much better 💙
Thank you to our amazing vets and for your assistance 🙏
Thankfully, Norman has a second chance at a free life where he belongs 🐒
Some pics of his healing process and his favorite mielies 😊

Nolan 💔
This beautiful boy was in a really bad way and could hardly walk 😔
He was caught up and taken to a vet in the garden route. After a full assessment, it was very clear that the extent of his injuries and what he had endured were just too bad. He was humanly euthanized and put to rest 🐒
All the injuries and burns on his body all points to electrocution 💔 RIP beautiful boy

Noenkie 🐒💙
I am about 5 months old and have been a pet since a baby. I do not know what other monkeys are and think I am a human being 😞
I am a very happy chappy but finding it quite difficult to settle in as it is not the life i am used to 💔 Apparently the people that raised me didn't realise there was a place like Monkey Matters but have promised should they find another monkey they will bring him in straight away so he doesn't struggle like I am.
I am very excited to start my new life with these other creatures that look like me 😁 I finally have someone to play with and am not on my own ❤️🐒

Some great news about our MVA patient ❤️
After a few days in the care of our awesome vets at 9th Avenue Veterinary Clinic Walmer and a few days regenerating with us, the time was right to rejoin the troop ☺️🐒
He stopped, looked back, I think it was a thank you, then ran to the bush, looked around, and then darted up to the top of the trees 🙏 back where he belongs. Hopefully, he is a bit wiser on the road 😉

Please be careful on our roads. This boy was knocked near Willows and was rushed to the vet today 😔 he will stay for observation and meds as he has a concussion. No broken bones, fortunately 🙏
Please keep him in your prayers that he will heal, and we can release him safely back with his troop 🐒💙
Thank you to the passersby who assisted, we truly need more people like you ☺️

I am Nineth 💙
This girl was found in a bad way on the side of the road just outside PE. Passersby saw her and stopped, noticed she was breathing and rushed her to 9th Avenue Veterinary Clinic Walmer, hence her beautiful name 😊
She stayed at the practice for a few days to determine the extent of the injuries. Her concussion was bad, and it was touch and go for a while 💔
Her fight for life was stronger than we knew, and after a week or so, the improvement was tremendous, jumping from branch to branch and enjoying all her snacks 😊
Unfortunately, we couldn't trace the lady who bought her in to find the exact location to release her back near her troop so Nineth will be joining a new troop at the centre. 🐒❤️

Nikita and Natalie are the best of friends and play continuously 😁
Little Nikita was taken off children who were mishandling her and showing her off in the streets. She was starving when the kind people demanded she be handed over.
We managed to get a lift for her to get to us asap. Some love, TLC, and of course all the attention from Natalie and Nikita settled in slowly but surely 🩷

🐒💔 Not a happy ending 😞
This little one was on his dead mommy on the road near Kragga Kamma. All the cars drove past for 2 days before someone stopped to move mommy out of the road and check 💔 and here was this little freezing, starving, and still body barely looking up at them.
He was taken to a vet where he was assessed and still seemed to be concussed. We tried through the night to give him a chance, but unfortunately, he was not doing good at all and was taken in to be humanely euthanized instead of leaving him to suffer. RIP sweet angel 🐒
PLEASE, if you see a monkey in the road or on the side, please stop to check. You could just save a life 🙏

The brutal truth of what our primates have to endure across the country!
Very sad that this is the next generation of SA.
Thank you for all you did for him ORC and so sorry for your loss 💔🐒

Not for sensitive readers.

A few days ago we posted an update on the location of Raygun the baboon. He had safely navigated his way through the suburbs and industrial areas of Pretoria and had finally reached an agricultural area full of crop farms and game reserves.
He was in our opinion in safe territory.
Sadly he made a wrong turn 40km further on his adventure and landed up on the roof of a Secondary School just outside of Delmas.
The learners at the school decided it was a fun idea to brutally stone and kick him. They tied him up with wire, placed car tyres around his body and set him alight. He burnt to death.
We went out early this morning to see if we could locate and retrieve his body, but when we arrived our presence attracted a lot of unwanted attention and Flash and Freckles, being the voice of reason, convinced us to leave promptly.
We then waited a few kilometers down the road for twenty minutes for the small crowd to disperse. We weighed up the options and decided that if we drove really quickly, we could pick Raygun up, what was left of him, and get out of there. So, this is what we did.
According to some residents, a witch doctor came through last night and cut his hands and head off, and then cut his chest open and took out his heart. We buried his remains earlier today under a Marula tree on the Sanctuary.
We failed him terribly. We are deeply saddened for the way Raygun was ripped from this world. His death serves as a stern reminder to us of the work we still have left to do to protect wild animals and what a far way the youth needs to come to learn respect and appreciation for other living beings.
