Lucky Lucy Foundation Changing lives one by one - with us they have time to trust and heal themselves again. My head must have been about a centimeter away from the track.

Lucky Lucy's Story:
My name is Lucky Lucy and I was tied to a railway line to be hit by a train. All I remember is that I was happy and playing, I was fed and didn’t go hungry. Perhaps my owner did love me at one stage cause I lived well and warm, I was clean and had friends to play with and I found a boyfriend and carried his babies, but then suddenly for some reason something changed in my owner

. He went looking for a strong rope, something that couldn’t snap or get loose and he took me with him, which I thought would be the usual stroll you go on with your owner. But then we were at the train tracks and he grabbed me, took my hind legs and stretched them out to be tied to my front legs, them my body stretched, was tied to the railway line. Then he took my head and tied it to the bolt that holds the track in place. Then he turned and walked away… didn’t even look back. I thought at first this must be a game but he disappeared. I didn’t know what was going on – then I felt the vibration and heard the noise… I saw this huge train coming at me and I couldn’t move… I tried with all my strength but I just couldn’t move…

The train went over my leg – my paw was gone and my muscle had been ripped from my already smashed bone. I didn’t feel any more… I just lay dead still and waited to die – a few more trains went over me… I just closed my eyes and hoped I would die soon to end this agony. Out of nowhere this man saw me, he screamed and ran away only to come back with two people. They jumped out of their car and cut my neck and paws from the ropes. I don’t know if my life was now going to be completely over cause who would want to keep me alive – in my state? They put me in their car and took me to the hospital. I heard the lady and man say “Hold on for us girl… don’t give up… we will help you”. Now I will try my best to pull through, I know they are asking everyone to pray for me, so I will pray for me too.

A HUGE AND HEARTFELT THANK YOU ... Emma Allen for being absolutely AMAZING!

🚀🛸 Mission Accomplished: The First Space Ship Has Landed! 🛸🚀

Hold onto your whiskers! The very first official space ship has landed at alCATraz, and it’s not just any spacecraft ... it’s a one-of-a-kind kitty sleeping pod, designed for intergalactic naps and cosmic comfort!

We are in full countdown mode as we get alCATraz ready for a huge surprise, and this special piece of equipment has arrived at the most purrfect time. Let’s just say the crew (our curious cats) has thoroughly inspected the landing gear with a few sniffs, paw pats and a successful test-nap or two.

Thank you Emma for donating this magical snooze-mobile: it may seem like a simple gesture to some, but to us and especially to our feline explorers, it means the universe.

With every gift, big or small, you help us take one giant leap for catkind. Your kindness lifts us up, fuels our mission and reminds us that we are not alone in our journey to create a sanctuary filled with love, safety, and joy.

On behalf of the entire Lucky Lucy Cattery Team, both the humans and our furry astronauts, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. Your generosity helps us shoot for the stars and we promise to care for this precious gift (and every single whiskered passenger who boards it) with all the love in the galaxy.

From all of us at Lucky Lucy:
We see you. We appreciate you. And we SALUTE YOU.

Cosy Cats & Cold Truths 🐾🌧️

With the cold and wet weather settling in over the past few days, our cats have been on a mission to find the cosiest sleeping spots and it’s been so heartwarming to see them so content, safe and warm.

But as we watch them snuggle in, our thoughts go out to the countless stray kitties who don’t have that comfort. No warm bed. No roof. No guarantee of their next meal.

Please don’t judge the stray cats in your neighbourhood ... instead, offer a bit of kindness. A small, dry shelter made from a box or old carrier, a bowl of food and clean water can make a world of difference. Kindness costs little, but it travels far.

It’s sobering to remember that many of our own beloved cats were once strays, just like the ones you see outside today in your neighborhoods.
We are often asked to take in cats from families who are moving or immigrating, but we are not a rehoming agency. By taking in those cats, we close the door to the ones still living and struggling on the streets. And sadly, no shelter can carry the burden of all the strays alone.

The only real solution lies in community collaboration. Feeding programs, sterilisation (TNR) and compassion are the tools we need to create change. Welfare organisations can’t do it alone — we need you.

Together, we can live in harmony.
Together, we can be the difference.

When Dedication Doesn’t Clock Out 🐾

There’s something truly special about seeing one of your team members walking the dogs in their care after the workday has ended. It speaks of love, commitment and a heart deeply rooted in compassion.

Samsung and Katryntjie absolutely adore Hastings. Since moving in with Hastings and Steve on the farm a few months ago, these two lucky souls enjoy regular walks ... almost every single day after work. And on Hastings’ days off? The afternoon strolls magically turn into mid-morning adventures.

It warms our hearts to witness this kind of dedication. Hastings, thank you for being part of our team - your commitment, both on and off the clock, is nothing short of admirable.

To the Incredible Team of Glitter

Some people walk into your life and leave a trail of light behind them, a kindness that lingers, warmth that uplifts and generosity that humbles you in a way you cannot explain. To each member of the Glitter Team please know that YOU are those people.

Just before winter could settle in fully, this remarkable team made it their mission to wrap each of our workers in love and comfort. Fifteen absolutely beautiful, high-quality rain jackets, one for every single team member, were gifted to us as part of their Father’s Day initiative and we are still reeling from the kindness.

And then, as if that wasn’t enough, each staff member also received a bundle of joy in the form of delicious cookies (which have made every cup of tea or coffee feel a little more special) and a generous helping of maize meal which is such a welcome and practical gift, especially during the colder months when having a little extra means everything.

To the wonderful Glitter Community - THANK YOU for opening your hearts and giving so generously toward this initiative. Your support didn’t just provide physical warmth; it brought dignity, encouragement and it is a reminder that we are surrounded by people who care deeply.

We truly believe we were blessed the day the Glitter team walked into our lives. Your support of our Foundation, and more importantly, the people who quietly keep things going behind the scenes, means more than words could ever express.

Thank you for seeing us. Thank you for being you. We truly appreciate each one of YOU!

~°~ In Loving Memory of Vigo - Our Little Legend ~°~
🌟 25 Nov 2023 – 11 June 2025

On Tuesday, our world grew quieter, our hearts grew heavier and our Sanctuary dimmed with the loss of one of the bravest souls we’ve ever known, our beloved Vigo.

From the very beginning, Vigo was a miracle. The night we rescued him, he was just 236 grams of fragile hope at 7 weeks old, a life already fading. We were told to leave him behind. They said he was “already busy dying.” But we saw something else, we saw a flicker of fight in his tiny body and a spark of spirit that demanded a chance AND we gave it to him.

What followed was nothing short of magic.

Through sleepless hours, determined hearts and endless love, Vigo began to eat, to thrive, to live. From that night on, he wasn’t just surviving this little boy was teaching us how to live fully, love unconditionally and fight like hell even when the odds are against you.

Vigo didn’t just touch our hearts ... he carved his name into them. Every visitor to our sanctuary felt it. He was joy, softness, mischief and light bundled into one tiny body. And though we always knew in our hearts that he may have been lent to us for just a short while, nothing could prepare us for the goodbye.

When we saw him starting to fade, we held on tighter. We hoped longer, but on Tuesday, we unknowingly began the last chapter of his beautiful story. And on Wednesday, we made the hardest decision and the kindest one for our boy - we let him go home.

Our hearts are shattered. The kittenry feels emptier and we still find ourselves looking for him. His absence is loud. There are moments when the memories sneak out of our eyes and roll down our cheeks because he was so loved and he is so missed.

But oh, how lucky we were to love him.

In his 16 short months, Vigo touched more lives than most do in a lifetime. He showed us that the size of the body doesn’t determine the strength of the spirit. That sometimes the smallest fighters leave the biggest legacies. That love - true, fierce, healing love can change everything.

Now, he runs free beneath the stars, his paw prints reflected in the heavens above the farm. Restored, whole and surrounded by light, we know he’s playing in fields without pain, chasing sunbeams, being his silly, beautiful self. We will look up each night and find him in the skies and feel him in the quiet moments, always.

Vigo, you were our miracle, our teacher, our tiny lionheart.
And though your golden heart may no longer beat here on earth, it echoes in everything we do.

Goodbyes are not forever, goodbyes should and will never be the end for us … so one day we won’t have to say goodbye to you ever again! Until we meet again - run free, our precious boy.

Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever remembered.

Operation “More Room to Zoom” ~ Mission Accomplished

With the weekend fast approaching, today was all about getting a few important movements finalised and what a joyful day it’s been!

Some of our beloved dogs who’ve been recuperating in the clinic after their operations finally got the all-clear to return to their more spacious surroundings. With gentle care and patience, our dedicated staff guided them back to their regular camps, tails wagging and spirits high.

And then there's Trish and Kai, two familiar faces who recently found themselves back in our care. Today, they were moved into their very own little camp with more room to run, play and just be dogs again. They were absolutely thrilled! Trish and Kai now get to be part of the larger dog community up "on the hill", where the views are stunning and the energy is contagious.

Tomorrow will be extra special, they’ll meet our dog-walking volunteers for the first time and are sure to soak up every bit of love and attention.

No two days are ever the same at the shelter, but with careful planning and teamwork, each transition becomes a moment of progress for the staff, our volunteers and most importantly, for the animals who call this place home.

Here’s to happy tails and a well-earned weekend ahead!

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU ... Joanna Loftus for being absolutely AMAZING!

On behalf of the entire Lucky Lucy Team, we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation for the incredible donations of cat and dog food, beanies and socks to keep our staff warm during these freezing days, as well as oranges, potatoes, sweet treats and chips to brighten the winter and also the coffee and biscuits for our volunteers.

A HUGE AND HEARTFELT THANK YOU ... Brian & Michelle Gilbert for being absolutely AMAZING!

We want to express our deepest gratitude for your incredible donation of 6 x 20kg Monty & Me Essential Dog food, 6 x 1kg Probono dog biscuits and 5 x large bags of Dog Chews (ostrich chews, beef strips and beef drumsticks). Please know these treats and chews will make our dogs very happy and and the chews will keep them busy during the long and cold winter days.

Your generous gift of soft food truly blew us away - what an amazing act of kindness.

We know there are many worthy causes out there and we are deeply honoured that you chose to support ours. Please never forget that we appreciate your compassion and generosity from the bottom of our hearts.

For many of our dogs, this sanctuary is their forever home. They deserve the same comforts and dignity that pets in traditional homes receive and with your help, we can continue to provide that. Thank you for standing with us, for believing in our mission and for being part of the magic.

We SALUTE YOU!

This Saturday was no exception ...
Whether it’s raining or the sun is shining, whether it’s hot or chilly, one thing stays the same in our Retirement section: Saturday means braai time! 🐾🔥

Every late Saturday afternoon, the aroma of braai wors fills the air and our golden oldies know exactly what that means. One by one, the little noses appear… followed by eager eyes and hopeful meows. 😺

Each kitty gets their very own little piece of braai wors - because no matter your age, everyone deserves to be spoiled from time to time.

It’s a small tradition, but one that brings big joy for them and for us. Here’s to the simple pleasures, shared with those who’ve given so much love in their lives.

𝐎ff𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 : 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄 f𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐎𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐎𝐖 F𝐮𝐧𝐝

From one tiny life, a legacy grows. We're proud to introduce the Hope for Tomorrow Fund our official Sterilisation and Emergency Fund ... created in memory of Hope and dedicated to giving others the chance she didn’t have.

𝑰𝒏 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒐f 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆
On Monday, 26 May 2025, even before the fund was officially launched, we received our very first donation: a generous R2,000 from the kind-hearted Jaime-Lee Green for cat sterilisations.

Jaime-Lee, THANK YOU! Your unwavering support of sterilisation efforts and your compassion for those without a voice have touched us deeply, time and time again. You always show up when we need it most and it means the world to us and to the lives saved because of your kindness.

There could be no more perfect time than now to officially launch this important fund. A fund born out of heartbreak, but built on hope. A fund that carries forward the memory of a tiny soul who left too soon: Hope, the little kitten we had to say goodbye to on 18 April 2025.

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆'𝒔 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒄𝒚
The Hope for Tomorrow Fund will support families who love their animals deeply but can't afford the full cost of sterilisation or emergency veterinary care. Because love shouldn’t be measured by a bank balance.

We often hear “If you can’t afford them, you shouldn’t have them,” but that’s not the whole story. We’ve seen people with nothing give everything for their animals and others with everything give nothing at all.

This fund gives HOPE. Hope for animals. Hope for people. Hope for better and brighter tomorrows.

Hope was more than a name.
She was a message - a reminder. And now, through all of us - she is a legacy. 💛
Let’s give hope. Let’s give a brighter tomorrow.

𝑷𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑 𝒖𝒔 𝒃𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔 𝒖𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓!

Tarzan on Wheels

Our sweet senior boy Tarzan was at the vet for a procedure and while everything went well, he was still a bit sleepy from the sedation afterwards. At 11 years and 5 months old, our gentle giant deserves all the comfort we can give him, especially on a chilly day.

Sometimes, we have to improvise … and what better way to get our drowsy boy back to his enclosure than with a bit of wheelbarrow taxi service? 😄

Thembeka was on chauffeur duty, gently wheeling Tarzan to his warm, cozy bed, where a few well-placed hot water bottles were waiting to help him feel snug and safe.

Every animal in our care is family and we believe in treating them with all the love and tenderness they deserve.

Rest well, brave Tarzan. You will soon feel better!

☀️🐾 Soaking Up the Calm Before the Storm... 🐾☀️

Our clever kitties know just how to make the most of a sunny day before the winter winds roll in! With heavy rain and icy temperatures predicted for the weekend, today has been all about sunbathing, gentle garden strolls and full-body stretches.

It’s a quiet kind of joy watching them take in the outdoors - the calm before the cold, the sunshine before the storm. Some are curled up under their favourite bush, others are chasing shadows across the grass... and a few are simply lying on the coaches soaking up every last drop of warmth.

We’ve started making preparations for the weather ahead - extra bedding, warm hideaways checked, warm water bottles ready, and storm routines ready. As always, their comfort is our priority.

If you’re nearby and planning for the cold too, don’t forget your own pet companions this weekend - please bring them inside, keep them dry and give them a warm, safe space to ride out the weather.

Wishing everyone a safe and snuggly weekend ahead from all of us (and the sun-soaked whiskers) here at the Lucky Lucy Foundation. 💚
