Hyacinth Haven Bird Sanctuary

Hyacinth Haven Bird Sanctuary Hyacinth Haven is a personally funded sanctuary offering a lifetime home to mainly parrots and other birds that simply had nowhere else to go.

Hyacinth Haven was originally built to accommodate much loved companion birds, a place where they had as much freedom in as natural surroundings as possible. Over the years however, many people sought to offer their own companion birds a better life and so we agreed to take them in. A safe haven has also been offered to birds that have for various reasons needed a new home. The only alternative fo

r some of these birds was euthanasia. And so, Hyacinth Haven became more of a sanctuary as the rescued birds far outnumber the original companions. At Hyacinth Haven we do not adopt out these birds but rather endeavour to give them a more natural life with their own kind in large purpose built aviaries. Here they are encouraged to express their natural behaviours and have the freedom of flight. The sanctuary consists of three main aviaries; Hyacinth Haven which is home to the macaws, Grey Too which houses mainly African Greys and Cockatoos and The Gentle Aviary for birds of a quieter and gentler disposition. Alongside and inside these are other transition aviaries and enclosures for birds that do not get along in the main aviaries for various reasons.

*Edit... As we are still being spammed, I'm afraid I have had to turn off commenting on our posts for the time being. Apologies once again and thank you for your continued support.
Our apologies to everyone on this page who got spammed, unfortunately this page is not monitored as often as it should be. The birds themselves keep us busy enough!
Hopefully I have now deleted all the comments from Hilary Kenny and Cathy Caldwell and blocked them. Hyacinth Haven is in no way affiliated with 'Parrots for Adoption & Rehoming' and, as I am sure you are aware, we do not give out any of our birds for adoption or fostering and we most certainly do not sell any of the birds in our care.
Our apologies once again and a massive thank you for your support.

Max Update
Max is now embracing his special new aviary along with a "pair" of rescued yellow collared macaws (recent arrivals) that were ex breeder birds. You can see the terrible condition they arrived in as well as the many missing nails. This one is now Max's shadow and totally ignores his previous partner.
Every time I went into the aviary, Max would be in his feeding area and proceed to stick his beak inside a bowl, frustrating if you are trying to get a pic.
With help from some friends I managed to get him to another area in his aviary so I could finally get pictures showing him "at large" and give you a look at his environment now.
The difference his beak makes, and the space he is now in, can be see from his vastly improved feather condition.

Have not had much opportunity to take photos recently so I was blown away by these beautiful ones taken by Victoria Matthews, a lovely recent visitor to Hyacinth Haven.

Thank you so much to everyone around the world for all your interest, kind wishes and offers to help. I have been astounded by the numbers and have a sincere hope that this will translate into more interest to help and advance avian medicine.
I have attached a video of Max, the day after the operation, eating his first solid chunk of food in two years ! It really is amazing to see his enjoyment.
Because of the many questions I have received asking for more information concerning Max and the specialized, and very special, team that made this all possible I and putting two links below. One is to the article by Bunnycorp, the proshetic company involved which details all the people and companies involved,, and the second one is the article I wrote with more background information on Max for Happy Tails magazine.

It has been a while now and Max seems to have adapted perfectly to his 3D printed Titanium proshetic beak. I am going to give it a little longer just to make sure and then move him into the big aviary I specially built for him.
I thought you might enjoy seeing the progression from the day he lost his top beak to now with his new proshetic fitted and functioning.
First photo shows Max the day his beak was broken off by another macaw.
Second photo shows how his bottom beak grows unhindered and needed trimming regularily.
Third and forth photos show the first time Max traveled to Onderstepoort for his MRI scan, seemingly quite unconcerned with the fuss.
Fifth photo shows the trial of a printed beak in nylon to check fit.
Sixth photo shows the final 3D printed Titanium beak.
Seventh Photo shows Max agressively trying to get to me. I have to say thet the sound of Max clamping that beak on the wire is quite terrifing.
The last three recent photos show Max and his beak. He is cracking open pecan nuts with ease and eating as normal again.

This is the second article concerning Max and his new beak (the first posted below).
Trevor unfortunately is still without internet, but has signed with LTE, so hopefully will be back online very soon. Claire.

Pleased to say that Max is still doing well with his new beak, and he and the marvelous Professor Steenkamp have made it into the news!
This is the first article, I shall post the other one above.

I am please to report that so far, Max is doing very well with his new beak. Today he took his first bite of solid food in two years! Claire.

I am pleased to say that Max had his surgery today to fit his new beak. The surgery went well and here we are waiting for him to wake up from the anesthesia. It will probably be about a week before we can ensure that it has been completely successful, but will keep you updated.
Unfortunately Trevor's internet has been taken out by the baboons again, and so I am posting this on his behalf. Once he is back up and running he will post more videos and photos.
Claire.

Max update
The surgery to attach Max's 3D printed titanium beak is provisionally scheduled to take place on the 12th October 2021 at Dr Brendan Tindall's Robberg Vet Clinic in Plettenberg Bay. Professor Gerhard Steenkamp will be flying in from Onderstepoort to do the operation with Brendan handling the anaesthesia required.
Please keep Max in your thoughts that day and I will post further updates as this progresses.
