Mushrooms will always be a miracle for me, because they appear outside of my schedule, without my cultivation, outside of my control.

While we still go foraging, usually at the wrong time, it's mainly to observe and enjoy the forest rather than acquire a meal. At home, I spread Agaricus subrufescens over all our veggie beds, and they are our mainstay mushroom. While we cannot predict exactly when they'll fruit, we get many many meals, throughout much of the year.

I'm so excited to be sharing an update from Kelly and Bruce in our newsletter tomorrow! I asked them to share more about the process of moving and farming without owning land, and I'm so inspired by their persistence, humility, and clarity. Here's a sneak peek:

"We have grown food and worked in places that grow food in 4 different provinces and a multitude of microclimates - I feel like that has really given us broad knowledge for the work we do, both farming for ourselves and consulting for others that wish to start growing food. We've also formed great connections across most of South Africa and it is really wonderful to know that there are so many people with hands in the soil all across the country. We have learnt to become both adaptable and resilient as we've left behind harvests, seeds, compost and hard work on multiple occasions. Each new place presents a unique set of strengths and we've learnt that it is best to work with what the land is saying - with the exception of tomatoes, which we have grown in almost every space we've been in (especially spaces where tomatoes "can't be grown.")"

You can read their story by signing up to our newsletter (9am tomorrow!) or by checking out our newsletter archives.

And if you'd like to share your growing wisdom, or an update on your story, please let me know.

Look at the tree in the front yard: the tree doesn’t seem to do anything. It just stands there, vigorous, fresh, and beautiful, and everyone benefits from it. That is the miracle of being. If a tree is less than a tree, all of us will be in trouble. If a tree can be a real tree, there is hope, there’s joy. So if you can be yourself, this is already love, this is already action. - Thich Nhat Hanh
