Why are Glen-Graze Rescue Sanctuary and this team absolutely focussed on education of the importance of sterilization? Because we experience first hand how it feels when a young life leaves your hand and much as you try to save that little life - heartbreaking, soul destructive moments and an unbearable feeling of failure fills your entire being. It eats its way into your memory that you just casually have to file because you cannot risk losing faith and hope in the future for the animal kingdom π’, there is no other way but to swallow the moment and put that strong pokerface on while moving to the next animal in need but somewhere, somehow, when the lights go out, sadness and sorrow devours your thoughts... πππ’π
Here are some facts about teenage dog pregnancies that are highly risky because adolescent mothers are physically and mentally immature. Their own bodies are still growing, making labour dangerous, while their lack of maturity often leads to neglect of the puppies.
Teenage dogs are incomplete in physical development. ANOTHER FACT THAT WE ARE DEALING WITH IN OUR COMMUNITIES are that dogs can experience their first heat cycle as early as 6 months, but they are NOT fully grown. Their pelvic bones may not be wide enough to pass puppies, leading to life-threatening obstructed labour (dystocia).
Another factual point is that because a teen dog is still learning how to navigate the world, she lacks the emotional maturity to cope with a demanding litter, which can lead to neglect and rejection.
Adolescent mothers are more likely to experience postpartum anxiety, exhibit aggression toward their puppies. They can also completely abandon and neglect her puppies because just like human teenagers, adolescent dogs undergo massive neurological and hormonal changes. Their prefrontal cortex is still developing, making them more impulsive, easily stressed, and prone to overreacting. Most of all they still want to play and run, not understanding the responsibility of motherhood.
Help us help them by sponsoring any amount possible that can add up to R500, assisting us in this battle with sterilizing as many dogs and cats as possible and save so many unborn lives.
