I still don’t quite believe it’s all real, but it is and I am eternally grateful and humbled by all of this!

Thank you to everyone involved in making this possible, especially for your belief in my special dogs and I, and all that we are building here in this special place we get to call home and our playground.

“I have every useless thing in the world in my house there. The only thing wanting is the necessary thing, a great patch of open sky like this. Always try to keep a patch of sky above your life, little boy,” he added, turning to me. “You have a soul in you of rare quality, an artist’s nature; never let it starve for lack of what it needs.”
~ Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time.

They say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I guess that makes it worth three in the mountains…

I don’t just want anyone to shoot one of these special birds in this truly special place. I want people who get it. Who grasp and really feel the tangible feeling and magic that pulses through these very mountains and wing beats. To have it take a hold of them slowly but surely. I want people with reverence and respect for everything that this entire dance represents up here in this secluded yet magical place. And lastly, I want people to meet my dogs and I in our everyday home and life, without trying to be a generic hotel or lodging. There will always be improvements to be made, and always something to fine tune and polish, but when I really look at it all and break it down, we’ve come a long, long way.

What we do is special, what we put on involves thousands and thousands of hours of blood, sweat, tears and faith. Coupled with a deep visceral feeling that can only be captured through the moments shared afield, the Mountains bring it all together in a way that only a master seamstress could put together, without any fluff or fraying threads.

When you work with the plough you feel the soil, and this places very dirt is under both mine and my dogs nails, and no matter how hard I scrub them, it just won’t go away.

I’ve always said that if you walk hard and far enough you meet your true self. And as much as I believe in and understand that maxim, actually doing it each time when I’m putting some hard yards in, I am reminded as if it was my first time realising it all over again.

The luminous, Alpine like emerald grasses have slowly but surely put on their winter yellow coats. The wind has an icy feel that scythes through your layers like only the Highlands can do. And in a strange sense, even the dogs act differently, like they know it’s back to business - but that could just be my exuberant imagination running wild. I’ve been putting concerted effort into unexplored areas and places, areas that I probably would ordinarily look at and think, “No, there wouldn’t possibly be Greywing there”, but of course as you can probably guess, we’ve found plenty of large coveys in these areas. It just goes to show that when you think you have things figured out with nature, She will surprise you and keep you on your toes.

When I think about it, I’ve been learning a lot lately, class has really been in session and for a change I’ve been the diligent scholar sitting at the front desk with eager eyes and a neat, unspoiled uniform. I’ve lost Aera to a season ending injury, and with one excellent dog down and the busiest season of our lives thus far, one really starts to feel the pressure, especially when the whispers are all about how good the dogs are up here in Ouranopolis. It’s a real game of attrition in these mountains, and I’ve been on a steep learning curve. Managing and resting dogs as well as taking their diet and supplementation to a whole other level has been the narrative for the past year. These brilliant animals make a living for and with me. I could not do what I do without them, so the very least I can do is give them the very best I can possibly get my hands on.

If you aren’t learning, you aren’t living, and I guess that’s what it all comes down to; we’ve been living hard and true.

“Every creative knows that their work has a symbiotic effect—as they create they themselves are created.” ~ Joel Uili

Some days I have to pinch myself that this is all real, that it is my daily reality. Marinated between all of the work, stresses and being happily busy, there are these moments where it’s all a bit surreal to accept and take in. But take it in we must - even if it is just sitting quietly, sipping a glass of wine, and reflecting on all that has happened and all that is still to come. Nature knows no kings, and her secret is patience - probably two very pertinent and important lessons to meditate on every single day wherever we find ourselves in this mad world.

Living in rhythm with nature is a blessing I don’t overlook or take lightly, especially as things start to ramp up and get a little crazy with the season fast approaching. So I like to take extra care in keeping these mantras close to my heart.

“The pursuit of our calling will naturally take us to places where a transcendence of self is required. Only by elevating ourselves beyond our own patterns of existence, can we move closer to reaching what our work is seeking to become.”

Sometimes you just have a moment here on high. It’s usually a simple moment. Nothing over the top, or loud. And it’s usually a quiet one too. Not riddled with action and noise. This was one of them. We took a break for the client, to rest up and find his feet at altitude. I was answering the usual questions and dishing out sweets for sugar (very important and underrated when you need a quick lift) and water. And then I was giving the dogs that were on this particular jaunt some attention. Baggio as usual the ever personable fella he is jumped up gently and perched on my chest, and we were having a chat. Our good client and friend happened to snap this candid and interconnected moment.

Life is just a series of moments. That’s all it really is at the end of the day. Stay in the moment. Stare it square in the eyes. Irrespective of the guise it takes and the mood it is dressed in. It’s all for our greater good anyway. The good, the bad and the beautiful…

“When the work has no soul it’s an empty thing. It has no insides, no guts, no spirit. It needs the human smudge. Fingerprints all over it that say, “This thing lives because there I am - in it.”
~Human Soul Creates Great Works, Joel Uili.

A candid moment working with Saxo.
My dogs have a part of me in them, a part of my soul. And they take that part with them wherever they go, whenever they go. It isn’t dramatic, it’s the truth. That is why I believe we do not have any competition, not many others are willing to sacrifice a part of their souls for this. And this is precisely why we aren’t really in the hunting business - we allow guests to glimpse this inner world and interconnectedness and hopefully they are able to grasp this nuanced and intimate dance between man, dog and nature.
