🐾 Diagnosis: Othaematoma 🐾
Meet Lady... a 6-year-old Basset Hound who recently visited us at Innovavet Veterinary Clinic.
Lady came to us with a small swelling in her outer ear, which turned out to be an Othaematoma - a painful accumulation of blood between the skin and cartilage of the ear.
🚑 What is an Othaematoma? 🚑
An Othaematoma is usually caused by trauma to the ear, often due to an underlying ear infection (otitis externa). When dogs shake and scratch their head and ears, the small blood vessels can burst, leading to a pocket of blood.
🩺 How is it treated? 🩺
Lady underwent surgery to repair the Othaematoma. We anesthetized her, made an incision in the skin on the inside of the ear, and sutured the skin to the ear to promote healing. We also started her on medication to treat the underlying ear infection and prevent recurrence.
💉 Why is it important to treat Othaematoma? 💉
If left untreated, Othaematoma can lead to further complications, such as infection, scarring, and deformity of the ear.
We're glad Lady is on the road to recovery! With Lady's long ears, we placed a light bandage to prevent her from shaking her ears and causing the wound to start bleeding again.
With proper care and treatment, she's expected to make a full recovery.
At Innovavet, we're committed to providing high quality care for your furry friends. If you're concerned about your pet's ear health or suspect they may have an Othaematoma, don't hesitate to reach out to us.
