The vigilance of two Vryburg Police Officers resulted in the arrest of a 43-year-old minibus occupant on Saturday, 09 July 2022, for possession of 21 suspected stolen sheep.

Investigation into the matter is underway and the suspect is expected to appear in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 July 2022.
In another unrelated incident, a middle aged suspect is also expected to appear in the Vryburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 July 2022, for stock theft.

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General Fannie Masemola has applauded a multidisciplinary team established to prevent and clamp down on illicit activities at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) for their vigilance.

At about 12:36 on Thursday afternoon, a security official at the Airport alerted police to suspicious looking items in a hand luggage that had been carried by a man who was destined for Singapore.

Upon further investigation and interrogation of the suspect, police found rhino horns weighing 26kg in the man's hand luggage. The horns were seized and the 41-year-old man was arrested by members of the SAPS and will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday to face a charge of contravention of the Biodiversity act 10 of 2004 which prohibits the illegal trade of the rhinoceros horn.

Mother and son to appear in court for possession of suspected stolen stock

NORTH WEST - A 45-year-old mother and her son, aged 18, are expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrates' Court in Tlhabane on Monday, 8 November 2021, for possession of suspected stolen livestock.

The duo were arrested at Lefaragatlhe village near Tlhabane following an incident in which a shepherd was killed and livestock robbed at a cattle post in Serutube village outside Rustenburg on Thursday, 4 November 2021,

According to information available at this stage, reports suggest that three herdsmen were herding cattle at about 17:00 when three unknown males emerged from the bushes. The trio caught one of the herdsmen and tied his hands with a rope, then robbed him of his money and a cellphone. The suspects went to another herdsman (25), tied his hands and also robbed him of his cellphone and cash.

Furthermore, the suspects allegedly demanded the cattle and in the process, shot and killed the 25-year-old herdsman while his colleagues were assaulted with the butt of a firearm. The suspects then drove out a herd of cattle from the cattle post.

A manhunt launched by Phokeng Detectives and Stock Theft Unit immediately after the incident, led to the recovery of 21 cattle in Lefaragatlhe village. Consequently, 11 cattle were positively identified and linked with the incident. Further investigations revealed that two other cows with calves were stolen a week ago at the same place. In addition, police seized other cattle that were found at the place for further investigation.

CAPE TOWN - An armed suspected poacher was shot dead while his accomplice managed to escape when Kruger National Park (KNP) rangers followed up after hearing gunshots and stumbled upon them.

A backpack with two rhino horns was recovered next to the body of the suspect, as well as a large-calibre rifle and poaching equipment.

A carcass of a male black rhino was found nearby, indicating that the horns were hacked from this particular animal on Saturday.

The KNP has seen an increase of 29.41% in the number of poachers arrested between July and September 28, 2021.

KNP managing executive Gareth Coleman congratulated the anti-poaching teams for their weekend success and the prosecuting team on the conviction and sentencing of Simon Mahumbane Lubisi to 19 years in prison in relation to the killing of a white rhino in October 2014.

Four suspected rhino poachers were arrested in the KNP over the weekend, South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Monday.

Members of the Rangers Corp, assisted by the K9 Unit and the aviators of the Airwing, arrested the suspects at the Stolznek section of the park.

In the first incident on Friday, rangers followed up on a spoor and startled the suspected poachers, who were sitting under a tree. They tried to flee, but the rangers quickly rounded them up and arrested them.

A hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment were seized at the scene. The suspects will appear in court while investigations continue, SANParks said.

"We are saddened to have lost a rhino over the weekend but are encouraged by the brave actions of our multidisciplinary anti-poaching teams who successfully took out two rifles from the system and apprehended suspects who are now in custody.

STOCK THEFT THIEVES SENTENCED

Yesterday, the Ermelo Regional Court sentenced Mduduzi Soko (36) and W***y Chazinga (64) from Bethal to various sentences for stock theft.

The magistrate, Eben Jonker convicted the pair and sentenced them to 6 and 4 years imprisonment respectively.

In October 2016, the police in Davel reacted to a tip off about stolen cattle being transported on the Davel-Bethal road en-route to Standerton auction. When stopped, the occupants started to blame each other but were subsequently arrested.
Seven cattle belonging to Hurwitz farm were recovered and positively identified by the complainant due to the clear brandmarks on them.

The state advocate, Charles Lloyd stated in aggravation of sentence that both accused had similar previous convictions and that it is quite clear that proper compliance with the Animal Identification Act 6 of 2002, by marking animals the way they should be marked, is a very effective tool in combatting stock theft.

Farming communities are rallying together and are taking the fight to stock thieves by using the latest technologies to trace and prevent stock theft and are assisting the police with roadblocks and information. Advocate Lloyd added that it is not necessary to 're-invent the wheel' but that all what is required to combat stock theft is 100% compliance with the Stock Theft Act and Animal Identification Act.
