FURENSICS CASE FILE UPDATE

Jasper's Journey to Peace – Session 1

Let me just say this boy made me so proud! 😃

Today was our very first official session together, and Jasper had every reason to be suspicious of the strange new human arriving at his home.

When I arrived, he barked at me and chose to keep his distance. Instead of forcing interaction, we gave him the freedom to retreat and observe from a safe distance.

We started with a simple game of scattering treats in the grass, allowing Jasper to sniff, explore, and make his own choices.

Something incredible happened next...

The barking stopped.

The distance began to shrink.

The nervous glances became curiosity.

One of Jasper's biggest challenges is eye contact. Direct eye contact can be uncomfortable and even intimidating for him. We started with brief glances and slowly worked our way up to longer moments of eye contact, all at Jasper's pace.

Each time he chose to look at me, he was making a brave decision.

Jasper also chose to stay nearby while I spoke to his mom. He offered a sit. Then a relaxed down. Eventually, he began responding to cues and even chose to approach me to take a treat from my hand while standing upright, an imposing figure in front of him!!!

The biggest success today wasn't obedience.

The biggest success was trust.

Fearful dogs don't need to be forced into confidence. They need opportunities to discover that they are safe.

Today, Jasper took the first steps on that journey.

Case Status:
🟡 Trust Building in Progress
🟡 Confidence Growing
🟢 No Aggression Observed

I'm incredibly proud of this boy and excited to see where the investigation takes us next.

Thinking about adopting a shelter dog?

I will be visiting the shelter today to meet a new potential family member and it made me think of all the important aspects to consider when adopting a new furry friend. 😃

It's easy to fall in love with a cute face, but choosing the right dog involves looking beyond appearances. A dog's behaviour, ability to recover from stress, and compatibility with your lifestyle are often far more important than whether they already know a few commands.

Remember, shelter environments can be overwhelming, and many dogs won't show their true personalities until they feel safe and secure. Taking the time to observe, ask questions, and understand the dog in front of you can help set both of you up for a successful future together.

Every shelter dog has a story. The goal isn't to find the "perfect" dog it's to find the right match and give them the opportunity to write a new chapter. ❤️

FURENSICS CASE FILE #003

📁 CASE: The Chaos Coordinator

Meet Bear.

At 3½ years old, Bear has been accused of numerous offences, including:

Jumping on people
Furniture destruction
Refusal to surrender evidence (toys)
Unauthorised security operations
Restricting access to shared premises
Ignoring commands (selectively)

Initial witness statements suggested a dog who was "naughty."

However, after a thorough Furensics investigation, the evidence tells a different story.

Bear is highly intelligent, incredibly food motivated, full of energy, and has simply never learned how to channel all that enthusiasm productively.

Beginning in July, Bear's rehabilitation programme will focus on:

- Building engagement and focus
- Teaching impulse control
- Learning loose leash walking
- Introducing calm behaviour in the real world
- Providing healthy outlets for his energy through enrichment and play

Current Assessment:
❤️Adult body
❤️Puppy brain
✅ Excellent potential

Will Bear's life of chaos continue?

Follow the case as Furensics investigates the clues and helps Bear learn the skills he needs to become the best version of himself.

FURENSICS CASE FILE #102

CASE: The Phantom Threat

🐾 Suspect: Jasper

Alleged Crimes:
• Suspiciously monitoring strangers
• Sounding the alarm at unexpected visitors
• Keeping everyone at a distance
• Possession of an overactive danger detector

Investigation Findings:

At first glance, Jasper may seem like a "problem dog."
But the evidence tells a whole different story.
Behind the barking, growling, and defensive behaviour is a dog carrying a lot of fear and uncertainty. To Jasper, the world can feel unpredictable and unsafe, and his behaviour is his way of trying to protect himself.

Diagnosis: Fear, anxiety, and a nervous system working overtime.

Investigation Plan:
Build trust
Create predictability
Teach coping skills
Help Jasper feel safe
Change emotions, not just behaviour

This case won't be solved overnight. There are no quick fixes in Furensics.

But every investigation starts with understanding the evidence.

Follow Jasper's journey as we uncover the clues, build his confidence, and help him find peace one step at a time. 🐾💚

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT “STUBBORN” DOGS 🐾

“He’s just stubborn.”
“She knows what she did.”
“He’s doing it to dominate me.”
But behaviour is often far more complicated than that.

What people label as “stubbornness” may actually be:
-stress or anxiety
-fear or uncertainty
-overwhelm
-frustration
-lack of understanding
-overexcitement
-difficulty coping with the environment
-unmet needs

Dogs aren’t trying to make life difficult for us.
They’re simply responding to what they’re feeling, learning, and experiencing.

When we stop asking: “How do I control the dog?”
…and start asking: “Why is this behaviour happening?”

Everything changes.
Because behaviour always leaves clues. 🕵️‍♀️

“He just barks at everything.”
…but barking is often more complicated than people think. 🐾

Dogs bark for many reasons:
- excitement
- stress or anxiety
- frustration
- fear
- boredom
- alerting to sounds or movement
- difficulty coping with their environment

Barking isn’t always “bad behaviour.”
Sometimes it’s communication. Sometimes it’s overwhelm. Sometimes it has simply become a habit because… well… barking works. 😄

The important question isn’t just:
“How do I stop the barking?”

It’s:
“WHY is the barking happening?”

Because understanding the why changes everything.

Raise your hand ✋🏻 if you are this person....

“Bury me with my old takkies…

The muddy ones.
The ones with paw prints on the laces and holes in the soles.

So when I get to the bridge,
the dogs who went ahead will know exactly who I am…

and they’ll come running when I shake the tennis ball.”

COMMON BEHAVIOURS WE ACCIDENTALLY REWARD 🐶

Dogs learn from what works.
And sometimes… we humans are surprisingly very trainable too. Thos puppy eyes can be so irresistible 😄

Some common behaviours that are often accidentally reinforced include:

- Jumping. ♡ gets attention

- Barking ♡ gets people to react

- Pulling on leash ♡ gets the dog where they want to go

- Demand barking ♡ earns treats, toys, or eye contact

- Pawing at humans ♡ gets interaction

- Stealing items ♡ starts a very exciting game of chase

This doesn’t make you a “bad owner" just an accomplice after the fact. 😆
Most people simply don’t realise how quickly dogs learn patterns that work for them.

The good news?
Once we understand WHY behaviours continue, we can start teaching better alternatives.

Because behaviour always leave clues.
