BIOSECURITY 101 event at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Onderstepoort - what a fun day! Well done to the Onderstepoort Paraveterinary and Veterinary Student Committee-OPVSC for this initiative - you displayed some impressive organizational and leadership skills in pulling this off 💙. Thank you to all students and staff who came by and took part in the challenges - congratulations to the winners! It was great to showcase that hygiene and infection control go well beyond clinics and theatres and that something as mundane as cleaning footwear before disinfecting can make all the difference in preventing the spread of disease - as of course can proper hand hygiene. Thanks to all involved!

🚨 FLY STRIKE: A DEADLY RISK FOR BUNNIES! 🚨

With reports of unusually high fly numbers in Johannesburg circulating in the press and on social media, we urgently need to talk about fly strike—a fast-moving, deadly condition that can affect pet rabbits in just hours.

🐰 Who is at risk?
All rabbits can be affected, but those most at risk include:
✅ Elderly or disabled rabbits who struggle to groom themselves
✅ Overweight bunnies who can’t reach their back end properly
✅ Long-haired breeds prone to matting
✅ Rabbits with dirty or damp fur, especially around their bottom

🛑 Prevention is key!
✔️ Check your rabbit’s bottom at least twice a day—especially in warmer months
✔️ Keep their living area clean and dry—remove soiled bedding daily
✔️ Use fly screens and deterrents to keep flies away
✔️ Feed a proper diet to prevent digestive issues that cause messy bottoms

⚠️ Emergency action—don’t wait!
If you see maggots on your bunny, this is a life-threatening emergency! Get them to a rabbit-savvy vet immediately. Do not try to treat it at home—every minute counts!
