Unfortunately Pidwidgeon passed away this afternoon. He had a good morning and was begging for food almost hourly - then from about midday he started going backwards.

I provided heat and pumped electrolytes into his crop (a few drops every half an hour) but it wasn't enough.

He fought very hard and I am incredibly proud of him. I also take comfort knowing that someone was by his side when he passed and that he will be fondly remembered not just some feral pigeon dying by the side of the road.

This is Pidwidgeon. He was brought to me as a suspected dog bite victim - upon examination it became clear that something else was going on. He has paramyxovirus and perhaps the worst case I have ever seen - along with the characteristic green, foul smelling diarrhoea he also has torticollis, incoordination, and complete paralysis of his lower limbs.

He has been here for three days now - three days of me not sleeping as I am constantly needing to reposition him to keep him comfortable, needing to administer feeds, electrolytes, and medication, and a lot of the time anxiously checking if he is still breathing.

My goal currently is to let him know that I am here - if he decides to stay I'll walk the road to recovery with him and if he decides to leave I'll be there to let him know he is not alone.

Most rehabs and vets won't bother with a pigeon, they will either turn you away or euthanase immediately - I however believe pigeons deserve as much as we would give any macaw, eagle, or cockatoo. They are not less.
