From a defensive, grumpy, and incredibly misunderstood boy to a beloved family member. 🐾✨

When Olof first arrived here at Besida as a SABA (South African Basset Adoptions) foster, he carried a lot of walls. He was bitey, difficult, and protective. But with time, patience, and a lot of gentle understanding, those walls began to crumble, revealing the beautiful soul underneath.

And this past Saturday, Olof took the biggest step of his life—he went to his forever home! 🏡❤️

There is a quiet, restorative magic in the moments we share with animals. It’s in the gentle lean of a shoulder, the soft rhythm of breathing, or a playful, affectionate nibble when they feel entirely safe in your presence.

I’ve often reflected on this connection, and how deeply it impacts our well-being. As Andrew N. Rowan beautifully put it:

"There is already solid evidence of animal contact having significant health benefits and that it positively influences transient physiological states, morale and feelings of self-worth..."

When we step into their world, our heart rates slow down, our defenses drop, and we are reminded of what it means to just be. Onyx and I had one of those grounding moments today—a simple exchange of mutual trust and joy that leaves you feeling lighter than before.

Our animals teach us so much about healing, resilience, and unconditional acceptance, often without a single word being spoken. 🌿✨

Today's lessons were simple but profound:

At Besida, we don’t just have "livestock" and "pets." We have a community of teachers. Whether they are grazing in the Wheatlands sun or curled up in a barn or next to us in bed, they are showing us how to live with an open heart.

I’ve come to realize that their inability to talk is actually a gift to us. It forces us to look closer. It reminds us that love isn't something you say—it's something you do. It's in the way we show up for them, and the way they, in turn, show up for us.

Whether it’s a donkey, a sheep, or a dog, they live with a transparency that is breathtaking. They don’t overthink their affection; they just give it. They don't hide their fear; they work through it.

🐾 "Big dogs, little dogs, and a whole lot of managed love."

When people see a large, diverse pack of rescue dogs, it’s completely natural to feel a little overwhelmed. You look at the size differences, the different breed energies, and you wonder: Is it safe?

The short answer is: Absolutely, because safety is never a compromise for us. 🛡️❤️

Take Khalil, our gorgeous Shepherd-cross. He is big, he has tons of energy, and as you can see, he loves jumping up to say a enthusiastic hello to Marelize! But watch what happens next. That same big, energetic boy turns around and tenderly grooms Eleanor the Basset.

Behind the scenes, managing a pack like this takes constant vigilance, deep understanding of dog behavior, and 100% active monitoring. We know every single personality, every boundary, and every dynamic.

Because we put safety first, it creates a secure space where true friendships can blossom—proving that love isn't limited by breed or size. Bassets and big mixed-breeds alike, they are all part of the family, watching out for one another. 🐶✨

🌪️ From Tornado to Tranquility: Bravey’s Guide to the Weekend. 💤

Anyone who knows our boy Brave-Heart knows that he usually operates at one speed: non-stop tornado! He bounces, he plays, and he keeps us on our toes constantly.

But even the most energetic heroes need to recharge their batteries. 🔋✨

I managed to catch him in a rare, completely peaceful moment—with his handsome head resting perfectly on my pillow, fast asleep. We wanted to share this sweet moment to wish every single one of our incredible supporters a safe, cozy, and wonderfully chilled weekend ahead.

There is nothing quite like the moment a sensitive soul realizes they are safe, loved, and finally home.

We want to send a massive, heartfelt thank you to Maretha Mattheus for opening her heart and home to our beautiful Basset girl, Nina. Nina is a sensitive soul who needed just the right touch, and Maretha is providing exactly the patient, loving environment she deserves.

The best part? Nina isn't just getting a wonderful new mom; she’s getting a built-in best friend! She now has a Basset sister named Mia. We had the pleasure of meeting Mia, and we just know these two low-riding girls are going to be absolute partners in crime.

This isn't a "happily ever after" video. It’s a "right here, right now" moment.

Benji is a complicated soul. The reality of our daily life isn't always this quiet; it’s often filled with the sharp edges of his aggression, the frantic heartbeat of his separation anxiety, and the constant management of his failing hips. He is a dog who lives in a state of high alert.

But in this moment, none of that matters.

He didn't just lay down; he chose to let his weight settle into my chest. He tucked his head into my shoulder, and I let mine rest on his. In my professional world, I’d call this "co-regulation"—two nervous systems finally finding a frequency that feels like safety. On the ground, I just call it a miracle.

There is a profound beauty in a creature who has every reason to be defensive finally deciding it’s okay to breathe with you. He isn’t "fixed," and the struggles will be there when we get up from this bed. But for a while, the labels of "aggressive" or "anxious" don't matter.

Sometimes the best therapy is simply being the person a wounded soul feels safe enough to be vulnerable with.
