I was watching them sleep today and had to record it—going over Cuddy’s whole body just to capture how completely, deeply relaxed she is. She’s sleeping so soundly, half her body casually draped right over Willem the Bassets's head. Little Chantie somehow managed to squeeze into the last tiny bit of space remaining ON his head and Willem is far too deep in dreamland to mind being used as a pillow.

There is something so special about watching rescue animals sleep like this. When they know they are safe, loved, and fully secure, they drop their guard entirely.

Just three souls completely at rest together. 🌿✨

Some wins are big, but some are 233 kilograms big! 🐶📦✨

A massive, heartfelt shoutout to Hill’s Pet Nutrition for their incredible donation of 233kg of specialized food for our SABA gang! From premium dry kibble to rich soft food and targeted therapeutic diets, this delivery could not have come at a better time.

Case in point: meet sweet old Beast! 🐾

Poor Beasty has been dealing with a super sensitive tummy for a while now. But after just two days on Hill’s Gastrointestinal Support food, the transformation has been nothing short of amazing! He’s back to wagging his tail while he eats, walking around with a smile on his face all day, and simply thriving.

There is truly nothing like the joy of good food when it brings back a senior pup's spark. Thank you, Hill's, for helping us give dogs like Beast the exact care they need! ❤️🐾

Sanctuary Secrets: The Vivid World of the Senior Dog 🐾

We often hear people say that senior dogs "live in a bit of a fog." But at Besida, we see the opposite. We see dogs who are finally clear-eyed about what matters most.

1. The Olfactory Library: A dog’s brain is dominated by the olfactory cortex. For our seniors, "sniffing" isn't just a physical act; it’s a cognitive one. When you see a senior dog standing still in the wind with their nose up, they are gathering data. They can detect the "scent of time"—knowing if a friend passed by an hour ago or just seconds ago.

2. Emotional Synchronization: Seniors have spent years perfecting the art of "reading" human emotions. They are often the first to offer comfort because they can literally "smell" the cortisol (stress) or oxytocin (love) on us.

At Besida, we honor the slow pace of our senior fosters from SA Basset Adoptions NPC 2017/457111/08. We don't rush the walks because those walks are their way of staying connected to the world. A soul is a soul, and these golden souls have more to tell us than anyone else—if only we are quiet enough to listen. 🤍🐾

Stress level: High (the humans trying to coordinate a whole sanctuary relocation). Willem’s stress level: Absolute zero. 💤

If you need a lesson in surrender and trust, please look no further than our precious SABA foster boy, Willem. As many of you know, Willem has a mass in his abdomen, which means he is officially staying right here with us as a permanent resident to live out his days in comfort and absolute love.

And clearly, he isn’t losing a single wink of sleep over the upcoming big move!

While the humans are running around, checking lists, and stressing over the massive logistics of moving Besida, Willem is fast asleep on his back, mouth wide open, completely out for the count.

Why is he so incredibly relaxed? Because he knows our golden rule here at Besida Animal Sanctuary : "No animal is left behind."

Willem has full confidence that every single donkey, sheep, goat, cat, Besida doggo, our personal pack, and all his fellow SABA foster kids are moving together. He knows that no matter where the physical sanctuary is, the love, the care, and his favorite nap spots are coming right along with him.

If only we could all sleep with the absolute certainty of a Basset Hound! 🐾❤️

The big question of the night: Where exactly am I supposed to sleep? 🧐

I walked into the bedroom ready to wind down, only to find every single square inch of the bed completely occupied by a very warm, very snuggly pack. They have zero regrets, absolute comfort, and have made it very clear that this is a "human problem," not a dog problem.

I suppose the floor isn't that cold tonight... 😅

A delivery that fills bellies,warms beds, and keeps our sanctuary running beautifully! 🐾🧹✨

We are overwhelmed by the incredible kindness walking through our gates this week. We want to send a massive, collective thank you to Eduard Steffen for dropping off a mountain of essential goodies that we use every single day!

Eduard truly thought of everything. Not only did he bring food and biscuits for the kids, but he also remembered the practical side of running a sanctuary—bringing brooms, mops, cleaning aids, plastic containers, and a beautiful pile of warm blankets and towels.

If you watch the clip, little Ness started the inspection, and Kenzi and Ben wrapped things up with a very personal, tail-wagging thank you.

Eduard, thank you for thinking of all of us here and for dropping off so many things we were in desperate need of. Your generosity makes a massive difference in our daily lives! 🐶❤️

The Sniff Inspection Team has given their 10/10 stamp of approval! 🐾👃✨

If anyone ever tells you that rescue kids don't appreciate the gourmet life, just show them this video. Age is just a number when it comes to the pure, unadulterated joy of chicken liver morning!

The moment those packets hit the counter, the entire kitchen turns into a beautiful, jumping, tail-wagging sea of excitement. Young and old alike, they know exactly what a good breakfast tastes like.

This daily highlight is all thanks to one incredible human. We want to send a massive, collective thank you to Eddie Bunge for always ensuring we have packets of chicken livers on hand for the kiddos' breakfast sauce. Eddy Bunge

In the first clip, Moonie and I are sharing a quiet cuddle while Chiara gently rubs her face against my leg. In the second, Marelize is completely wrapped up in a flurry of kisses and cuddles with our Basset boys, Cowboy and Scooby.

Two entirely different species—goats and dogs—yet the expression of love is unmistakable.

It proves something we hold very close to our hearts here at Besida Animal Sanctuary: true love transcends species. The need to feel safe, the desire to connect, and the pure joy found in a shared moment of affection look surprisingly similar whether you have two legs, four legs, fur, or hooves. Love is a universal language. 🐾🐐❤️

This profound connection is exactly why we do what we do, and it forms the heartbeat of a dream we are building toward: our upcoming Animal-Assisted Therapy Programme.
