Corn isn’t toxic to dogs or cats. But should it be the foundation of their diet?

In many commercial pet foods, corn (maize) is used because it’s inexpensive, shelf-stable, and easy to process into kibble. The problem is that dogs and cats are biologically designed to thrive on animal-based proteins and fats, not carbohydrate-heavy grains.

A diet where corn is a primary ingredient often means:
• High in starch (sugar)
• Lacks sufficient protein
• Prioritises shelf life over biological needs
• Heavily laced with pesticides
• Made from Genetically Modified Organisms (approximately 85% of South African corn is GMO)

Consider this. Just this month, a nationwide recall of several major dry pet food brands occurred after testing found Salmonella contamination and elevated levels of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) found in the maize used to produce the food. These mould toxins naturally develop on grains like corn and can cause digestive issues in pets when present at high levels.

This doesn’t mean corn is “poison.”
It does raise an important question though: Why are grain-heavy ingredients the foundation of so many pet foods in the first place?
