Biliary season has unfortunately shown its ugly face again this year, with the clinic having had at least 10 cases already.
Biliary is a disease transmitted by ticks which affects the red blood cells.
When the tick bites the animal, it transmits a tiny infectious parasite into the bloodstream. These parasites then multiply in the red blood cells; during this multiplication process, many red blood cells are invaded and destroyed, resulting in anaemia.
The clinical symptoms of biliary are:
1. Fever.
2. Anaemia (visible as pale gums).
3. Unwillingness to eat.
4. Vomiting.
5. Dehydration.
6. Jaundice (visible as yellow gums).
If you see any of the above symptoms in your pet, pop them into the clinic for a quick check-up.
Prevention is the best cure in the case of biliary & we stock a wide range of topical and oral antiparasitics (e.g. Bravecto, Simparica, Revolution, Advantix, Frontline & Seresto collars) to protect your pets.
